The Rascal Flatts formed when three Nashville transplants decided to form a pop country band at Fiddle and Steel Guitar Band in late 1999. Two of the three men, Gary Levox and Jay DeMarcus, shared a common lineage, being second cousins in a family tree rife with musicians. DeMarcus originally moved to Nashville from Columbus, OH in 1992 with East to West, a Christian music duo whose second half was Neal Coomer. He convinced Levox to make his way south from Columbus in 1997. Joe Don Rooney came into the picture when he met DeMarcus as part of the Chely Wright backup band. With the three performers on the same page, they performed as a nameless entity. It was not until late 1999 that they became the Rascal Flatts in name. The story goes, one night after performing a member of the crowd spoke with them, reminiscing about his old garage band, the Rascal Flatts. The three adopted the name and soon after found a record label, Lyric Street Records. Success struck early for the group. By early 2000 they had released a single "Prayin' for Daylight." This debut song topped the Billboard country charts. Three more songs from the same eponymous album would land in the top ten of that country chart and the Rascal Flatts became the hottest country group to start the 21st century. That album would go double platinum. Though the band toured to promote the album, the Rascal Flatts did so only as a supporting act. Instead of remaining the biggest supporting act in country, they took to the stage as a headliner after the release of Melt, their sophomore album. The album would go triple platinum and the band would sell millions of concert tickets. The next albums, Feels Like Today (2004) and Me and My Gang (2006) would both go quintuple platinum. At the same time, Rascal Flatts tickets were selling at an incredible rate, landing them inside the top 25 for touring acts. Success had come and country had a new powerful act to court the young adult audience, an audience a genre whose typical listener was in their 40s needed desperately to survive. Their success beget many more young country groups. This powerful youth movement has challenged the Rascal Flatts position in the country universe. The 2007 album Still Fells Good only went double platinum and the 2009 album Unstoppable only reached platinum. Nothing Like You, released on November 16, 2010, will need a huge surge to help the group reclaim its dominance of the young country listeners. They have already taken to the road in 2010 and have even graced the stage at the Grand Ole Opry.
