The city of Rapid is located in the state of South Dakota, United States. Rapid City falls in the Pennington County and is the county seat of the same. According to the 2000 United States Census, the population of the city stands at 59,607.

The city is named after the Rapid Creek and is popularly known by the nicknames of 'Gateway to the Black Hills of South Dakota' and 'Star of the West'. It is situated on the eastern slope of the Black Hills and is almost bisected by the 'Dakota Hogback'. As per the United States Census Bureau, Rapid City has a total area of 44.7 square miles, of which 99.87% is land.

Rapid City is a major tourist location and features a number of attractions, such as the 'Journey Museum', the 'Black Hills Playhouse', the 'School of Mines Geological Museum', the 'Prairie Edge Art Gallery' and the 'Art Alley Gallery'. Other famous teams are the football team 'Rapid City Flying Aces' and the hockey team 'Rapid City Rush'.
