The first album of "Public Enemy" was "Yo! Bum Rush the Show", was released on Def Jam Records in the year 1987. The album was critically acclaimed and was also a commercial successful. But it was their second album, "It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back", which became a huge success. The album proved to be a revolutionary one, by the rap and rock critics, and hip-hop became a reckoning force for social change. On one hand, the band became a popular one while on the other hand, it was also criticized by for its comments on political issues and criticism on media. They also created uproar when they contributed a controversial theme in the1989 film Do the Right Thing.
They released their next single "Welcome to the Terrordome" in the early part of the 1990. Its first single was a huge hit single but then it caused controversy as the lyric "still they got me like Jesus" was termed as anti-Semitic. They released their third album "Fear of a Black Planet" which became a huge hit. Not only this the album also shot into the pop Top Ten as the singles "911 Is a Joke," "Brothers Gonna Work It Out," and "Can't Do Nuttin' for Ya Man" became Top 40 R&B hits. In the year 1995, Chuck D broke off with Def Jam. Chuck started his own record label and also a publishing company. In the year 1996, he released his first debut album, "The Autobiography of Mistachuck".
In the year 1998, Public Enemy came back with a big boom and released the soundtrack Spike Lee's He Got Game. The record was a huge hit and also garnered favorable reviews.
