December 23, 2010: Poinsettia Bowl Tickets: San Diego State Aztecs vs. Navy Midshipman
The San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl will be played on December 23, 2010 with Poinsettia Bowl tickets to Qualcomm Stadium to see the San Diego State Aztecs and Navy Midshipmen try and end the college football season with a win.
The San Diego State Aztecs are definitely in a rare position for a bowl game, playing on their home field. The Aztecs are coached by Brady Hoke, who leads San Diego State to a bowl game in his second season as the head coach. The Aztecs finished the season fourth in the MWC standings with a 5-3 conference record and 8-4 overall record. They throw for 297 yards a game (11th) and run for 151.5 (63rd), scoring 35 points a game (20th). The defense is quite decent, holding the opposition to 22.8 points.
The Aztecs quarterback, Ryan Lindley, threw for 3,554 yard, 26 touchdowns, and 14 interceptions. He only completed 56.5 percent of his passes, but he has a very commendable 8.93 yards per throw average. His top two targets are wide receivers Vincent Brown and DeMarco Sampson. Brown had 61 receptions for 1,187 yards and 9 touchdowns. Sampson had 65 receptions for 1,175 yards fro 8 touchdowns. Running back Ronnie Hillman had quite a good year too, running for 1,304 yards and 14 touchdowns on 5.6 yards a carry. This should be plenty of fire power to bring to the Poinsettia Bowl.
The Navy Shipman are coached by Ken Niumatalolo, who favors the flexbone offense. This running heavy helped the offense net 288.9 yards on the ground (5) and 117.8 yards through the air a game. The team scored 31 points a game and allowed 22.3. This is a healthy scoring margin that led to a 9-3 record. Navy brings this powerful offense led by quarterback Ricky Dobbs (Passing: 1,380 yards, 12 TD, 5 Int; Rushing: 860 yards and 13 touchdowns) and running back Alexander Teich, who ran for 825 yards and 5 touchdowns. This running game will be useful at the Poinsettia Bowl eating up the clock to keep the Aztecs passing game on the sidelines and keep the game close.
