Artist Biography - Peter Nero
|
Peter Nero is an American pianist and pops conductor. At the age of seven, he started his formal music training and by the time he was fourteen, he was accepted to New York City's prestigious High School of Music and Art. There he won a scholarship to the Juilliard School of Music. In 1961, Peter recorded his first album which won him a Grammy that year for "Best New Artist." It was of course, just the beginning, after that he has won another Grammy Award with ten additional nominations and has released 67 albums. In his eight years with the RCA records, he has produced 23 albums, and with Columbia Records has sold a million copies. At seventeen, he performed Gershwin's 'Rhapsody in Blue' on Paul Whitman's TV Special which brought him his first major national TV success. Since then he has appeared on many top variety and talk shows, he has also made 11 guest appearances on 'The Ed Sullivan Show' and numerous appearances on Johnny Carson's Tonight Show.
Peter's greatest achievement is that he is the founding Music Director of the world renowned orchestra ‘Peter Nero and the Philly Pops'. ‘Peter Nero and the Philly Pops' have recently signed three-record deals with DRG Records, which is an extraordinary feat for any orchestra. The music maestro has made guest performances which include return engagements with the National Symphony Orchestra at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, the Buffalo and Dayton Philharmonics, the Florida Philharmonic, and the Pacific, St. Louis, Ottawa, Detroit and Virginia Symphony Orchestras. Peter also continues to tour throughout the year in solo recitals. Peter returned to New York's Carnegie Hall in the spring of 2003 to perform at the 150th Anniversary of Steinway Gala with many notable pianists, including Dr. Billy Taylor, Herbie Hancock and Michel Legrand, as he himself was a Steinway Artist for almost 50 years.
Peter's list of works in over the last 13 years, include three CDs with full symphony orchestra: On My Own, Classical Connections and My Way. He has recorded "Peter Nero and Friends", which features collaborations with Mel Torme, Maureen McGovern and Doc Severinsen. He has also released romantic CDs titled, 'Love Songs for a Rainy Day' and 'More in Love'.
This acolyte musician has been presented with six Honorary Doctorates, the most recent being from Drexel University in 2004 and the prestigious International Society of Performing Arts Presenters Award for "Excellence in the Arts." In 1999, he was honored with the 'Pennsylvania Distinguished Arts Award', presented by Pennsylvanian Governor. Peter Nero is an active philanthropist; he has participated in many important causes like funding for school music programs, raising funds for the building of new arts centers across the country, as well as research for cancer, dystonia and autism. He has always used his fame for the benefit of society and considers working for society as a noble cause. The musician is also a 'technocrat', as he is a sincere devotee and advocate of consumer electronics. But still the musician uses his traditional Steinway concert grand piano to make music.
