After having risen to fame as a member of the Kumbia Kings, Latin pop singer Pee Wee has now launched his own solo career in 2009. From the United States, Pee Wee was born Irvin Salinas on December 8, 1988, in Othello, WA. After having moved to southern Texas as an adolescent, Pee Wee was recruited by Latin pop hit maker A.B. Quintanilla III to join the Kumbia Kings, a group of performers with both a rotating lineup and a track record of commercial success. Adopting the nametag Pee Wee (a.k.a. Pee Wee González) on account of his relative youth, Salinas made his recording debut as a Kumbia King in 2004 with a hit single, Sabes a Chocolate, which was a cover version of a 1984 Menudo song.
Given the popularity of this breakout hit, Pee Wee was featured prominently on the next Kumbia Kings album, Fuego, in 2004. On Fuego, Pee Wee scored another hit single with Na Na Na (Dulce Niña), which reached the Top Ten of the Billboard Hot Latin Tracks chart in 2005.

In 2006, the follow-up Kumbia Kings album, Ayer Fue Kumbia Kings – Hoy Es Kumbia All Starz, spawned another Top Ten hit, Chiquilla, again featuring Pee Wee. Like many members of the Kumbia Kings before him, Pee Wee grew unhappy with Quintanilla and left the group in February 2008.
Once free of the Kumbia Kings, Pee Wee had a busy and successful year. He was featured on the Erre XI hit Carita Bonita and competed on the television talent shows El Show de los Sueños and Los Reyes del Show, taking first place on both. Upon signing his solo recording deal with EMI, Pee Wee made his solo album and concert debuts in 2009 with Yo Soy, on which Cumbayá was released as the lead single.
