When Paula was young her family shifted to Sudbury, Massachusetts. In the 1970's she taken care by foster parents. Many will be surprised to know that Paula is school drop out. Apart from being a comedian Paula Poundstone is also a writer. From 1993 to 1998 Mother Jones magazine carried a regular column 'Hey Paula!' by her. ABC telecasted her variety show The Paula Poundstone Show. For game shows like To Tell the Truth and Hollywood Squares she was a standard panelist. For three years she gave her voice to the character of Judge Stone on an animated series Science Court or Squigglevision aired on ABC channel. She was seen on hit shows like Storytime and Sesame Street on PBS. The renowned series Life & Times won her a local Emmy Award.

Completely Yours which is a children's audio book project was produced by Paula. Project won awards and gave voice to a character along with Ed Asner, Bea Arthur, Mary Tyler Moore, Lily Tomlin, and Kathy Najim. Project was released in 1997. Project consisted of a story about adoption and was named A Mother for Choco.
Paula also lent her voice for first five episodes of Home Movies for Paula Small. She is also regular panelist on a radio game show tilted Wait Wait... Don't Tell Me! which is produced by NPR. In the list of Comedy Central Paula stands at number 88 out of 100 greatest standups of all time.

On meeting Barbara Bush wife of former president of USA and mother of present president George W. Bush, Paula said "I pride myself on never having fallen for the idea that Barbara Bush was sweet and grandmotherly. I met Barbara Bush and, as I expected, she was a tank with eyes, not a nice person at all and why should that blow anybody away?"

Paula has adopted three children. In 1993 she adopted Thomas, her first child followed by adopting two more girls Allison and Toshia in 1997.
