Outback Bowl

Outback Bowl History (2000-Present)

This is not simply a college football game between two underperforming teams that have been frustrating fans all season. Outback Bowl tickets are tickets to see Joe Paterno continue his seemingly endless career and Urban Meyers play a farewell game at the age of 46. January 1, 2011 Penn St. and Florida hope to play the game of a lifetime to add to the legend of both these coaches.

Penn State finished fifth in the Big Ten after going 4-4 in conference play and 7-5 overall. The Nittany Lions scored 24.6 points a game and surrendered 22.6, relying on a balanced offense (231.3 passing yards and 142.8 rushing yards a game) to win. Sophomore quarterback Matthew McGloin took over starting duties in the final six games and led Penn State to a 4-2 record to save a season and produce a bid for the Outback Bowl. Running back Evan Royster has been the second half of the equation, running for 916 yards and 6 touchdowns.

Florida finished second in the SEC East Division with a 4-4 conference record and 7-5 record for the season. Meyer's Gators scored 29.3 points a game thanks to a powerful running game that gained 165.6 yards a game. Florida also had a decent defense, holding teams to 21.1 points a game. Despite the seemingly winning combination, the Florida Gators are headed to the Outback Bowl in what feels like a wasted season. Quarteback John Brantley took over for Tim Tebow and threw for 2,020 yards and 9 touchdowns. Trey Burton handled the running from the quarterback position, rushing for 347 yards and 11 touchdowns. Meyer used a full stable of running backs in his spread option, but only Jeffery Demps stood out with 531 rushing yards and 3 touchdowns.

The 2011 Outback Bowl may not figure into the national championship, but the game is highly anticipated simply because of the coaching matchup. Get your cheap Outback Bowl tickets to Raymond James Stadium and see if either living legend can pull off a convincing victory.
