The group's nucleus formed in Rubicon. Initially, they started off as a pop group with the significant directions from Rubicon and led by Jerry Martini of Sly and the Family Stone fame. However, they received a jolt when Rubicon's passed away in 1979. Soon after, bassist Jack Blades (b. 1954) floated a hard rock trio. It included drummer Kelly Keagy and guitarist Brad Gillis.

Three of them started performing under the brand name Stereo. However, after a little passage of time, they added keyboardist Alan Fitzgerald. Alan had a vast experience. He was an ex-member of Montrose, an offstage keyboard player for Van Halen, Gamma, and the Sammy Hagar group. A second guitarist, Jeff Watson was also included in their group and finally, preparations were on for the formation of a new melodic hard rock band, called simply Ranger.

It was in the year 1982 when the band changed its name to Night Ranger. They had to change their name as another country band, The Rangers, made claim over the trademark infringement.

With his particular group, the band completed its recording for Dawn Patrol for Boardwalk Records. The band's hit single, "Don't Tell Me You Love Me," made up many records and received a major boost through MTV video airplay. It also touched the #40 peak on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

Their fame doubled with the release of their second album, "Midnight Madness." This album had featured many of the well ballads like "When You Close Your Eyes" and "Sister Christian,". On looking at its wide popularity, it soon became a cautionary anthem for teenage girls in conservative America.

Night Rangers also gave some patriotic songs that put them into a different category. Some of their songs in the patriotic category include With "(You Can Still) Rock In America," The Sister Christian proved to a milestone in their career.

Even now, the Night Ranger members continue playing the summer festival circuit.

In 1999 they joined other 1980s band in the second installment of the Rock Never Stops Tour. They had joined the other 1980s band in 1999 for the second installment of the Rock Never Stops Tour.
