After a not so good end to the previous campaign of 2012-13, under the coachman-ship of Kirk Muller, the red and white outfit is looking for a revival of fortunes this season in NHL 2013.

The season has begun with a sour note for the Canes though, loosing defenseman Joni Pitkanen to a major heel injury. Jim Rutherford, the manager, has provided a respite though, signing the experienced Ron Hainsey to a $2 million contract. The 32 year old had averaged 22:51 last season with the Winnepeg Jets and ended the year with 123 blocked shots, the second highest in the league and tallied 13 points from 47 games. Ryan Murphy has been roped in to replace Pitkanen’s puck moving abilities.

The offense shouldn’t be a problem for the Canes. Punting 16 in their last four games, albeit three of them were loses, still it proves that when it comes to scoring the Canes have more than capable players for delivering the goods. The Russian Sniper, Sergey Tolchinsky is in red hot form, scoring in all of the last four encounters. Murphy too can be a threat up front, providing assists at will. Brock McGinn and Victor Rask are cropping up well. And if Jeff Skinner decides to return to his formidable form, along with skipper Eric Staahl, there won’t be many teams who can tackle this fast flowing attack. The defense on the other hand has some loopholes, as proved by letting in 25 goals in the last 4 games of 2012-13 season. An unstable goalkeeper rotation and the less than confident approach by the defensemen led to this whopping assault by the league’s front men. To get their hands on the prestigious trophy, the Canes need to solidify their back line. Addition of Pitkanen and Murphy shows some positive signs and will surely encourage the fans to yell their lungs out for the red and white brigade.

With a balanced looking team with a healthy mixture of fresh and experienced players, the Carolina Hurricanes will surely be one of the contenders for the championship. The PNC needs to be filled and the fans will have a reason to cheer the loudest for their team. Only future will tell whether the Hurricane blows away the opponents or it alters its course.
