At this point in the season, the positives are up front for Montreal, beginning with the team points leading center, Tomas Plekanec, who has 46 points on 10 goals and 36 assists. Plekanec is followed closely by the Canadiens' top goal-scorer, Mike Cammalleri, who has 20 goals and 17 assists. Montreal was looking for RW Brian Gionta to bring something to the table this season, but he has been hindered by injury and limited to only 17 points (9 goals, 8 assists) in 24 appearances so far this season. Marc-Andre Bergeron has been the surprise offensive defenseman with 23 points (10 goals, 13 assists) but currently carries a -5 plus/minus, while the other two-end players, defenders Andrei Markov and Jaroslav Spacek, both have an identical 12 points on 3 goals and 9 assists, with +/- numbers of 4 and 5 respectively. Keep in mind, however, that Spacek has put up those numbers in 43 games, while Markov and tallied his in only 10 games! These are talented two-way defenders that can really make a difference during the second half of the season. Montreal seems to have all of the tools to move up in the standings, and into a playoff spot by the end of the second half, but they need to stay healthy and begin firing on all cylinders at both ends of the ice in order to do so. In the winter of 1909, Ottawa businessman J. Ambrose O'Brien with the help of Jack Laviolette, founded the Club de Hockey Canadien. The club played its very first game in 1910 in the National Hockey Association. They won the franchise's first Stanley Cup championship in 1916 by defeating the Portland Rosebuds of the Pacific Coast Hockey Association. Les Canadiens were one of the four original clubs when the National Hockey League was founded on November 22, 1917. The Club Athlétique Canadien changed its name to officially become Club de Hockey Canadien and began displaying the celebrated "CH" crest. Even though the Montreal Forum was constructed for the Montreal Maroons, the Canadiens were the ones who inaugurated it in 1924 as the Mount Royal Area was under repair. The Canadiens won their second championship by defeating Calgary and continued to build their team and fostered a heated rivalry with the Maroons. In 1926 the Canadiens permanently moved to the Forum.
