Background - Ccha Super Six Hockey Championship
The first College Hockey at "The Joe" began on March 13th, 1982 where the first CCHA Championship took place at Joe Louis Arena. The Michigan State Spartans took on the Bowling Green Falcons in the final round.
The CCHA has been extremely aggressive in marketing the Super Six as a week-long event, but as commissioner Tom Anastos points out, the Spartan fan base grew as the program improved under Ron Mason's guidance.
"I think as fans rally around their programs, they're naturally going to follow them," Anastos said, "especially when they feel they've got a legitimate shot at winning a championship."
There are signs that the Super Six is become more of a destination and less of a day trip one makes when their team advances to the Joe. Both Ohio State and Miami brought vocal contingents to Detroit this year, and the city of Big Rapids virtually shut down last season when Ferris State advanced to the playoff championship game.
"I was talking to one of the [Ohio State] radio guys and he said they have Buckeye fans," Anastos said. "Once we can turn Buckeye fans into Buckeye hockey fans, there's a better chance [fans] will make that kind of commitment. I just think it's a slow evolutionary process."
The Road to "The Joe" came to an end in March as Michigan, Michigan State, Northern Michigan, Notre Dame, Miami, OH and Ohio State University qualified for this year's CCHA Super Six Championship. Not only was the league's post-season title on the line, but so to was the all-important automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. In one of the more dramatic runs to the title we have seen in recent years, the Buckeyes from Ohio State University put together spectacular back to back OT wins against Notre Dame in the quarterfinals and Miami, OH in the semi-finals, before knocking off No. 1 seed Michigan 4-2 in the Super Six finals to capture their first CCHA post-season title since 1971-72. Shortly after the tournament concluded, the Buckeyes were joined by fellow CCHA members Michigan, Michigan State, Notre Dame and Miami, OH in the NCAA tournament, as all four of these schools received at large bids to compete in college hockey's final 16.
Since its inception in 1971-72, the CCHA has grown in stature from a collection of fledgling hockey programs to the most respected conference in the nation on the ice, off the ice and behind the bench.
National Tournament
CCHA teams have accounted for 16 of the 52 NCAA Frozen Four participants from 1992-2004.
Eight different CCHA teams advanced to the NCAA Tournament in the 1990s: Bowling Green, Lake Superior, Miami, Michigan, Michigan State, Northern Michigan, Ohio State and Western Michigan. Ferris State, Miami, Michigan, Michigan State, Notre Dame and Ohio State have been involved so far in the new millennium.

2004 Season Preview

 The 12 current CCHA teams have combined to win eight of the last 21 NCAA Championships: Bowling Green (1984), Michigan State (1986), Lake Superior (1988, 1992, 1994), Northern Michigan (1991) and Michigan (1996, 1998).
Hobey Baker Memorial Award Winners
Five CCHA players have received the Hobey Baker Memorial Award which has been presented to the top player in U.S. college hockey since 1981: Bowling Green forward George McPhee (1982), Michigan State forward Kip Miller (1990), Bowling Green forward Brian Holzinger (1995), Michigan forward Brendan Morrison (1997) and, most recently, Michigan State goaltender Ryan Miller (2001), who is just the second netminder to receive the honor.
All-Americans
CCHA players have combined for 137 All-American honors, including 73 First-Team selections. Bowling Green defenseman Ken Morrow was the CCHA's first First-Team All-American in 1978. Since college hockey expanded to four conferences in 1984-85, Michigan's Brendan Morrison is the only player to have been named to the First Team for three consecutive seasons (1995, 1996, 1997).
The NHL Draft
24 CCHA players were selected in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft, including a pair of first-round choices. University of Michigan Goaltender Al Montoya was taken 6th overall by the New York Rangers. Michigan State defenseman AJ Thelen, the CCHA's best offensive defenseman award winner, was chosen 12th by the Minnesota Wild.
There have been nine first-round NHL draft picks from the CCHA over the past four years. For the first time, three CCHA players were selected in the first round of the 2001 NHL Entry Draft. Mike Komisarek of Michigan was chosen by Montreal (seventh overall), R.J. Umberger of Ohio State was selected by Vancouver (14th overall) and Dave Steckel of Ohio State was picked by Los Angeles (30th overall).
The Stanley Cup
The CCHA has had the names of 20 former players engraved on the Stanley Cup. The most recent additions are Dan Boyle (Miami) and John Grahame (Lake Superior State) with the 2004 Champion Tampa Bay Lightning.
Alumni in the NHL
The CCHA continues to flourish as a producer of NHL-caliber talent. The 2003-2004 season saw 70 former CCHA players perform at hockey's highest level. Michigan led the way with 18 alumni in the NHL followed by Michigan State with 14 and Bowling Green with 9.
Beyond the CCHA
73 former CCHA players currently have careers in coaching or management at the junior, collegiate and professional levels. Two current general managers in the National Hockey League played in the CCHA: Washington's George McPhee (Bowling Green) and Atlanta's Don Wadell (Northern Michigan).
National record setters
Michigan State's Ron Mason, who became the school's Director of Athletics on July 1, 2002, is the all-time winningest coach in college hockey history with 924 victories. Mason compiled all of his wins at CCHA schools: Lake Superior, Bowling Green and Michigan State. (Click here for the NCAA All-Time Coaching Wins List)
On February 10, 2001 Ryan Miller of Michigan State became the NCAA career shutout leader when he backstopped the Spartans to a 3-0 win over Alaska Fairbanks. It was his 17th career shutout and his career total stands at 24 through the 2001-2002 season. Miller's .950 save percentage in the 2000-2001 campaign still stands as the second-best single-season mark in NCAA history.
On January 9, 1998, Michigan's Marty Turco passed another former Wolverine, Steve Shields, to become the all-time winning goaltender in NCAA history with 112 wins. Turco finished his career with 127 wins.
Michigan State senior Mike Donnelly clinched the 1986 NCAA title with his second goal of the game with 2:51 remaining in a 6-5 win over Harvard and set the NCAA record for goals in a season with 59.
