The Bucs decided to build a tough defense built on a mix of zone and man-to-man coverage. The Cover 2 defense took the league by storm as the Bucs led by defensive tackle Warren Sapp and head coach Tony Dungy filled the seats. Bucs fans were buying tickets for playoff games.
The Bucs went from a joke to the top in the NFL, winning the Super Bowl in a 48-21 blowout in 2002. Derrick Brooks, Simeon Rice, and Dexter Jackson suffocated offenses for six years. The most recent teams have kept up the strategy and now continue to compete at Raymond James Stadium.

 The Tampa Bay Bucs have had a difficult 2009 season so far, winning just one game and losing seven. The defense has fallen from grace, allowing the third most points per game and fourth most yards. If not for still being able to create some turnovers this team might be the worst in the league both those categories. The offense averages a meager 16.8 points per game and cannot decide on a quarterback. Season starter Byron Leftwich lasted three games before being benched. Backup Josh Johnson lasted four games before being benched. Now rookie Josh Freeman is behind center. The first-round picks debut went pretty well. He led the Buccaneers to an upset victory over the Packers. His numbers were far from impressive, but he did throw three touchdown passes. The one consistent performer on the field has been tight end Kellen Winslow. Somehow he has caught 35 passes and five touchdowns amidst the QB carousel. Running backs Cadillac Williams and Derrick Ward have been threatening to take the starting job from each other all season long. Right now Williams has the job thanks to a 4.0 even rushing average, but who knows what will happen as the season progresses. The Tamps Bay Buccaneers are a team trying to find something positive to finish out this 2009 NFL season. That will most likely be the development of a quarterback. The remaining schedule has a few winnable games and three games at Raymond James Stadium.
