Oakland Raiders 2009 Playoffs

Oakland Raiders

The Oakland Raiders are a franchise with a rich history of postseason play, colorful players, and devoted fans. Those fans, who sometimes can be as colorful as the players, have been in a funk in the last few seasons because Oakland has not had Raiders playoff tickets since the 2002 season. That season the team faced their former coach and he tore the Raiders apart, beating them 48-21 with the Tampa Bay Bucs.

Oakland began the 2002 season without Coach Jon Gruden. Gruden had ended their previous funk with a 12-4 season in 2000 that ended a decade long absence from the top of the AFC West. The Raiders owner Al Davis did not want to pay the coach as much as he wanted, so he orchestrated a rare trade in which the Bucs would get the coach and the Raiders would receive four draft picks and cash. That season the team Gruden built again made playoff tickets available to Raiders fans. Rich Gannon won the NFL MVP and the team finished 11-5. Fate would have the Raiders meet their maker, Gruden, in Super Bowl XXXVII. Gruden’s knowledge of the team proved too much and the Bucs won 48-21.

Oakland Raiders Oakland Raiders Background

The 2008 Raiders are trying to finally put the devastation caused by the loss behind them. The defense must improve to make this season any different than the previous five. DeAngelo Hall and Nnamdi Aosmugha are two of the best corners in the league and they are joined by safeties Gibril Wilson and Michael Huff. The defense also has linebackers Kirk Morrison and Thomas Howard and defensive end Derrick Burgess to try and stop the run and put pressure on the quarterback. The defense should be vastly improved and make the playoffs a sincere possibility.

The offense needs to give the defense a chance though. JaMarcus Russell is starting his career as the future of the franchise and he has a number of weapons at his disposal. Justin Fargas and Darren McFadden provide plenty of speed. Ronald Curry and Ashley Lelie leave a lot to be desired at wide receiver and could be the undoing of the Raiders hopes for playoff tickets. The postseason hopes will require the offense to find some target for Russell, otherwise his talents are likely to be wasted.
