New York Giants 2012 Playoffs

New York Giants

The New York Giants postseason has been a most fortuitous one for the roster, the coaches, and, most importantly, the millions of fans. New York Giants playoff tickets are being sold for the final game of the NFL season schedule, Super Bowl XLVI at Lucas Oil Stadium on February 5, 2012. There the Giants will play the New England Patriots, the football team they played four years ago in the Super Bowl and the team they already beat this year during the regular season.

The two keys to this game are quarterback Eli Manning and the Giants defensive ends. Manning needs to continue playing like he is destined to become the Super Bowl MVP and the ends need to put plenty of pressure on the Pats MVP-caliber quarterback Tom Brady. Manning has posted a 103.1 QB Rating with just over 300 passing yards and nearly three touchdowns a game in the postseason. Defensive ends Justin Tuck, Jason Pierre-Paul, and Osi Umenyiora are finally healthy enough to take the field in the same football game and must get to the Brady, for it is unlikely this group of linebackers and safeties will be able to contain the enigma known as tight end Rob Gronkowski and tight end Aaron Rodgers.

New York has proven they can stop an elite offense when the Giants held the Packers to 20 points. The Packers offense is just as pass happy as the Patriots, though they too favor the deep outside threat like the Giants and not the deep interior play like the Patriots. They will need to use the same formula to stop the Pats though, getting to the quarterback in time to cause bad throws and potential turnovers.

New York Giants Playoff History

New York Giants New York Giants Background

The New York Giants are one of the NFL’s signature franchises. They won four NFL championships before the beginning of the Super Bowl and three since the AFL-NFL merger. The first three championships came between 1927 and 1938, losing two more in the process. Players like Mel Hein, Red Badgro, and Tuffy Leemans are names lost in the annals of history. The Giants fourth NFL championship came in 1956 with the aid of running back Frank Gifford, linebacker Sam Huff, offensive tackle Roosevelt Brown.

Years later, quarterback Y.A. Tittle led the New York Giants back to the NFL Championship time and time again, but they lost to powers of the era, the Chicago Bears and the Green Bay Packers. Things would turn around in the 1980s. Lawrence Taylor dominated the defense and redefined the middle linebacker position. Quarterback Phil Simms enjoyed a few standout performances, earning the accolades like the Super Bowl MVP in the Giants first trip to the big game, back in 1986. Four years later running back Ottis Anderson trampled the Bills defense and earned his Super Bowl MVP.

The New York Giants maintained their signature defense and running game and returned to the NFL postseason again and again. The Giants needed a new team for a new era. Though, actually, the defense was a return to the old, a focus on the front four punishing the quarterback. The second element was also a return to the olden times, with Eli Manning playing quarterback and miracle maker, throwing compelling touchdown passes in 2008 in the stunning 17-14 victory over the New England Patriots. OnlineSeats has the New York Giants tickets for the postseason for every playoff game now and in the future.
