Minnesota Vikings 2009 Playoffs

The Minnesota Vikings may not have won any Super Bowls or NFL Championships since their inception in 1961, but the franchise does have a playoff pedigree that would make most teams jealous. Vikings playoff tickets have come in droves, whether for the Purple People Eaters in the ‘70s that swallowed running backs and quarterback whole or in the ‘90s and early 2000s when Randall Cunningham and Dante Culpepper made the Metrodome the scene for 60 yard touchdown receptions by Chris Carter and Randy Moss or 50 yard scampers by Robert Smith. Minnesota has been blessed with some the games most exciting players through out its over forty year history and has made the fans flock to Minneapolis every Sunday during the regular season schedule and almost every postseason to see their team put up big numbers on the board and compete with the best teams in the NFL.
The Viking s came close to bring the Lombardi Trophy home in 1969, but Alan Page, Gary Larson, and Jim Marshall could not stop the Chiefs offense, as they lost 23-7 in Super Bowl IV after a 12-2 record in the regular season. The Vikings would playoff tickets to the Super Bowl a tradition in the next decade, but could not defeat the Dolphins in 1973, the Steelers in 1974, or the Raiders in 1976. The closest the Vikings have come since was in 1998. Randall Cunningham’s last season as quarterback was the year Randy Moss entered the league. He and Chris Carter were unstoppable duo up field with help from Robert Smith bringing the ball out of the backfield. An offense that may have been the “Greatest Show on Turf” before the Rams went 15-1 in the regular season easily defeating the Cardinals after a first round bye. A shocking upset by the Atlanta Falcons stopped a match up with the Denver Broncos in the Super Bowl.
Minnesota Vikings Background
This season Minnesota has put together a team that could win the NFC North and bring playoff tickets back to the fans for the first time since 2004. The defense is worthy of comparisons to the Vikings in the late ‘60s and early ‘70s. Kevin Williams and Pat Williams are two unmovable forces in the middle of the defensive line. The addition of defensive end Jared Allen gives them one of the leagues best pass rushers. The secondary, with Antoine Winfield and Cedric Griffin, could even lead to a coverage sack. E.J. Henderson leads a linebacker core that is there to pick up any pieces left by the line and cover the middle of the field. The offense is reliant on the development of Tarvaris Jackson. The quarterback has decent targets in Bernard Berrian and Sidney Rice, but has a true help in running back Adrian Peterson. If Jackson can keep the secondary honest, then the explosive running of Peterson and the speed of Rice and Berrian can give the Vikings the most complete team in the league.
