The Indianapolis Colts may not have one of the best postseason pedigrees thanks to the 1980s, but their franchise history is nothing to be ashamed of. The club has won three NFL Championships before the Super Bowl began and has won two since. The Super Bowls have teams whose heart, soul, and man all stood right behind the center. The Colts of the ‘60s and ‘70s had Johnny Unitas and the Colts of today have Peyton Manning. Both times featured a club respected and feared by teams throughout the league and teams that could never be counted out of the race for playoff tickets.
The latest Super Bowl came in 2005. The Colts had spent years as potential suitors who always seemed to fall just short, often at the hands of the eventual champions, the Patriots in 2002 and 2003 and the Steelers in 2004. The 2005 season seemed to be theirs. After wrapping up the extremely difficult AFC South schedule with a 12-4 record, the Colts went on to the playoffs. Peyton Manning was hungry for justification of his two MVP awards, and Tony Dungy needed a Super Bowl to prove he was more than just a defensive genius. This season the Bears defense is again highly touted and the Indianapolis Colts are again the favorites in the AFC. That favorite status comes after Tom Brady’s season-ending injury has eliminated the Patriots from the Super Bowl talks. The Colts have a difficult division schedule in the AFC South, but the inaugural season at Lucas Oil Stadium promises to be one worthy of playoff tickets.
Manning has a great running back in Joseph Addai who can also come out the backfield to catch the ball on check downs. Reggie Wayne has emerged as the top receiver and Marvin Harrison and Anthony Gonzalez are two sure handed players that can find holes in any defense. Dallas Clark is still a big target in the end zone. Colts playoff tickets will also feature a great defense led by defensive end Dwight Freeney and last season’s Defensive Player of the Year Bob Sanders. The future, or at least this upcoming season, looks bright for the Indianapolis Colts as a return to the Super Bowl appears to be in the stars.
