Detroit Lions 2009 Playoffs

The Detroit Lions history has been short on highlights. With the last NFL Championship coming in 1957 before the advent of the Super Bowl in 1966 or the creation of the AFL in 1960, the postseason history has been pretty bare since the 1990s. Since then the Lions have moved from Pontiac Silverdome to Ford Field and the regular season schedule has seen the Detroit come in no higher than third in their division. The last time the fans even had a chance to buy Lions playoff tickets was in 1999. That season was the year after Barry Sanders shocked the NFL with the Walter Payton’s rushing record in sight. Sanders helped the Lions be pretty consistent visitors to the postseason, though they only advanced beyond the first round of the playoffs once in 1991.
The Lions thought the frustration that led to five straight Wild Card Round playoff losses would be their biggest problem, but the 21st century has been anything but kind to a team that has been unable to build a winner in any season since 1999. Lions playoff tickets are a dream as Matt Millen’s reign as the Detroit Lions President and CEO of football operations has yet to offer any kind of return on the draft picks, free agent signings, or the fans general patience. Each year the fans look at the team schedule and wonder if that season is even worth watching.
Detroit Lions Background
The 2008 season again gives the Detroit Lions a chance to redeem themselves. The NFC North is a division that has a lot of question marks. Will Aaron Rodgers be able to perform as the starting quarterback now that Brett Favre is out of Green Bay? Will Tavaris Jackson be able to lead a coherent offense with the talented running back Adrian Peterson in Minnesota? Will the Bears return to the form that took them to the playoffs in 2005 and 2006? The Lions themselves are wondering if Roy Williams will ever fulfill his potential and if Calvin Johnson can build on last season. Jon Kitna has been a decent quarterback over the lat couple of years, especially when considering that he has not had a running game to speak of to open up the passing lanes. The defense has similar questions regarding their ability to hold any kind of a lead. The Lions are not out of the race for playoff tickets by any means, but they will need to see something change in the clubhouse’s culture that creates winners out of the many past losing seasons.
