Atlanta Falcons 2009 Playoffs

Atlanta Falcons

The Atlanta Falcons have not exactly had the franchise history that fans would hope for. After a couple glimpses of hope in the late ‘70s the Falcons quickly returned to the bottom of the NFC. For a while teams thrived with a couple division games against the Falcons, but Atlanta began to show some punch in the ‘90s and became scary in the 21st century. The Falcons may not be synonymous with playoff tickets, but the recent history at least gives fans some encouragement.

The best run the Falcons have had without question came in 1998. The regular season was dominated by the stories of awe as the Minnesota Vikings never failed to score less than 24 pints in a game. Meanwhile the Falcons quietly secured playoff tickets with a 14-2 season behind the play of Chris Chandler and Jamal Anderson. The deep postseason run took the dirty birds to the Super Bowl against the Denver Broncos, but the incredible season ended their in a 34-19 loss.

The Georgia Dome has seen years of promise with Michael Vick at quarterback, but his departure to prison last season left the Falcons reeling the entire season with a team built for Vick. This season the franchise has started over with rookie Matt Ryan at quarterback and Michael Turner at running back. The rookie and the second string back are being given chances rarely afforded players in their position and with how weak the NFC South could be this season, the team could have Falcons playoff tickets available on their schedule late into the season.

Ryan has an underrated receiver with big-play ability in Roddy White. Michael Jenkins may not be the most popular choice for a number one target, but his sure hands and good size make a big target that can go up with any cornerback. The main concern for the offense, other than starting a rookie quarterback, is the offensive line. Turner was an impressive backup to Tomlinson in San Diego, but the season is long and how he handles a young line and his first time being the main back will decide if playoff tickets are a possibility at the Georgia Dome.
