At 8-0 midway through the 2009 NFL season there appears to be no way that the New Orleans Saints are going to miss this postseason. The team is one of two undefeated teams in the league and has managed to do this with a pretty shockingly balanced offense and a pretty decent defense. The offense not only has a passing game engineered to perfection by Drew Brees, but has a strong running game between running backs Pierre Thomas, Mike Bell, and Reggie Bush. Combined the three have amassed 1,058 yards running the football and average 132.3 yards a game. Meanwhile Brees has an NFL-leading quarterback rating of 106.1. So far he has thrown for 2336 yards and 17 touchdowns. He is so good he has spread those passes and touchdowns out. Eight players have 10 or more catches and seven players have touchdown receptions. The defense is pretty good, ranking in the middle of the league in the most important defensive category, scoring defense. They allow 21.8 points per game. Other teams run the football for 112.1 yards a game and throw for 219.5 yards a game. These numbers are far from impressive, but the team's ability to create turnovers is something most teams lack. The Saints have forced an NFL-leading 24 takeaways. New Orleans has 16 interceptions and eight fumble recoveries. This allows them to give up so many yards without giving up points. The New Orleans Saints only have three games on the schedule left for home games at the Superdome.
