The Minnesota Vikings are sitting pretty on top of the NFC North with a 7-1 record with the lone loss coming against the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 7. This team is running away with the division and with the paltry football being played by the other three teams in the division the Vikings should win the division and come away with a first round bye in the playoffs. The team is winning games by 8.75 points a game thanks to a balanced offense and a defense that is able to play well enough to keep in the middle of the league in terms of scoring defense. Favre is playing the best football of his career statistically. He has a 106 quarterback rating and just three picks through eight games. He is busy making Sidney Rice, Percy Havin, and Bernard Berrian into acceptable wide receivers. He also seems to have developed a love affair with tight end Visanthe Shiancoe in the end zone. Shiancoe had just 11 career touchdowns in six seasons before this 2009 NFL season, but now has six and is on pace to score 12. Running the football is not a problem for this Minnesota Vikings squad. The fact that Adrian Peterson is averaging just 20 carries a game is a little disconcerting to fantasy football owners, but he is able to draw the defense in and free up those passing lanes that are making Favre's season. Peterson is still averaging 4.8 yards a carry and has scored 9 touchdowns, so he should still pass 1,000 yards easily and potentially score 20 touchdowns. Once Favre begins to use Peterson as a receiver things will get really scary. The defense is soft against the pass but manages to get it together in the red zone. This is not exactly the dominant defense that causes fans to remember the Purple People Eaters, but for a team with such an offensive force this seems to be enough. For the Vikings to do anything beyond the regular season schedule they will need to fix this though. The best teams in the league are those with a high octane passing attack that can counter Minnesota's own offense.
