The Jacksonville Jaguars’ 2012 season depends largely on the performance of Maurice Jones-Drew. The running back is a touchdown machine and the only part of the Jags offensive machine finding the end zone. His annual brilliance continues this season, and as last season, Jaguars tickets are a chance to see him run through a 9-man front and emerge with a touchdown at EverBank Field. He also happens to do his best to make second-year pro Blaine Gabbert look good by turning two-yard swing passes into 40-yard completions and to help the defense by putting them on the field for less than 40 minutes a game.

MJD is a nightmare for the opposition. At 5-7 he is undersized, but at 210 lbs. he is solid and able to absorb any hits, maintaining great balance thanks to his obscenely low center of gravity. Somehow he combines the quickness attributed to his height with the power associated with a pocket Hercules. The Jaguars are fortunate to have him to create a play action conflict, and they are lucky to have him as a safety valve or an actual route runner.

The defense is grateful because they allow a unit that dramatically improved last season another season to fix any tweaks and give first year Coach Mike Mularkey a defense to compete. Mularkey kept defensive coordinator Mel Tucker because Jack Del Rio was not going to stick around to play DC. Jacksonville has a compelling linebacker group with Daryl Smith, Paul Poseluszny, and Clint Sessions. Add the pass rushing talents of defensive end Aaron Kampman and the development of the promising secondary and the Jaguars are a quarterback away from contending for second in the AFC South and a playoff spot.

Gabbert looked awful his first season as a starter and has done little change minds in his second. This is despite a very strong arm and superb athleticism. He simply has not made the mental progress, failing to make reads and feel the pressure. It is not time yet to deem him a failure, but he is not fit to start on a Jaguar’s team with a questionable offensive line.
