The Green Bay Packers have managed to go 4-4 so far in Aaron Rodgers second year as the starter. If you think Packer fans are thinking of this season in any different terms you are mistaken. Brett Favre is back in the NFC North and the fans cannot help but compare how well Favre is doing compared to Rodgers. Rodgers has made the case that he is a very good quarterback and is the future of the franchise. He has the fifth best quarterback rating in the NFL (Favre has the second best), he is tied for third in touchdown passes thrown at 16 (with Favre and a few others), and has the sixth most passing yards (Favre is 13th in the league). The one category in which Rodgers has struggled is sacks. He is leading the NFL with 37, taking 10 more than the next closest QB and 19 more than Brett Favre. Rodgers simply holds onto the ball too long and has frustrated fans by taking sacks at the most inopportune times. The passing game is not the only thing the Green Bay Packers have going for them. The team is excelling at running the football, averaging 121 yards per game (10th in the league). Combine the success passing and running the football and suddenly you have a team that averages the seventh most points per game. At 4-4 this means that Packers have some serious defensive issues. The team is in the middle of the league allowing 21.5 points per game. The problem is that the defense is feast or famine. The four losses have come when this unit allows more than 30 points. The last two losses have come when each opponent has scored 38 points. For the Green Bay Packers to make a run at the playoffs they have to find away to play more consistent defense. This is the only thing the coaching staff can preach since none the averages or the give/take numbers are bad. Packers fans can come and see the four remaining home games at Lambeau Field left on the 2009 schedule and see if the team can pull it together. The opponents are not going to be easy. They play the Cowboys, 49ers, Ravens, and Seahawks, so if they can survive that stretch they can just about guarantee they are playing good enough football to make the postseason.
