The signing of Terrell Owens was supposed to be a great addition to the Buffalo Bills offense. Well, maybe that is an exaggeration, half the people thought he would crush quarterback Trent Edwards confidence and the other half thought he might be a decent receiver. So far neither has happened. The Buffalo Bills are 3-5 with an ineffectual offense that has somehow not inspired Owens to lash out. The team is tied for last place in the AFC East. The Bills offense currently ranks fifth to last in scoring offense with a 15.4 average. The numbers show that the team has issues passing the football (154.8 yards per game), but is a pretty good running team (110.0). It does not help that Buffalo has turned the ball over 15 times either. It also does not help when the offensive coordinator is fired just before the regular season started. There is plenty of blame to go around, but this team has to find a way to make the combination of Edwards and two good wide receivers (Owens and Lee Evans) work. Running the football is the one thing the Bills believe they can count on. Early in the season Fred Taylor was a more than simply effective cog. Since Marshawn Lynch has returned the running game has been hit or miss. The Buffalo defense has effectively countered the turnover prone offense with 18 takeaways, but has not been able to completely hold back the tide. They have done a decent job, holding other teams to 21.1 points a game (16th in the NFL). Buffalo has doen despite being the easiest defense to run against in the NFL (173.6 yards per game allowed). At 3-5, the season is far from over for the Buffalo Bills and fans will have three more chances on the 2009 schedule to see the Bills play at home at Ralph Wilson Stadium.
