Neil Diamond
Neil Diamond has been a man of many interests whose life could have easily followed several paths to success, but, luckily, he chose music and millions of fans are glad they have purchased tickets to see the venerable singer/songwriter perform live. His record sales are eclipsed by his tremendous reputation as stage act.
Born on January 24, 1941, Neil Diamond grew up in Brooklyn and discovered his love for music in high school. He also had a fondness for fencing and biology though, and he went on to NYU on fencing scholarship with the intention of becoming a laboratory biologist and find the cure for cancer. His senior year, though, before deciding whether to enter medical school, he was offered $50 a week to write songs by a music publishing company. He accepted the job and began to work in the Brill Building penning hits for other bands while they sold albums and tickets with his lyrics.
He and friend Jack Parker tried succeed as a duo, but after several unsuccessful singles Neil Diamond went out on his own and signed as a solo artist with Columbia Records in 1962. His own success would have to wait though. Instead his music, which he intended to perform and record himself, was being used by popular musical acts like The Monkees ("I'm a Believer", "A Little Bit Me, A Little Bit You", and "Look Out"), Elvis ("Sweet Caroline" and "The Grass Won't Pay No Mind"), and Deep Purple ("Kentucky Women"). While he was not earning money selling tickets directly, he was earning a solid reputation within the music industry for his lyrics.
By 1966 he was determined to move from the desk to the stage. Signing with Bang Records, Neil Diamond released several successful songs, including "Solitary Man", "Cherry, Cherry", and "Kentucky Woman". He appeared as the opening act for several groups, including Herman's Hermit and The Who. His successful songs did not result on his name on tickets so he switched labels.
Signing with Uni Records, the predecessor of MCA Records, Neil Diamond moved to Los Angeles in 1970 and a distinct mellowing of his song immediately became apparent. It was there that he finally gained recognition as an artist worthy of high tickets sales. The recording his show at the Greek Theatre in L.A., called Hot August Night (1970), had critics hailing him for his live performance for the first time in his life

2008 Plans - Neil Diamond
|
The reviews and the double platinum live record ushered in a new era of success for the singer/songwriter. Neil Diamond released seven platinum albums in the decade, including the soundtrack to Jonathan Livingston Seagull, a movie that bombed at the box office and with critics. The soundtrack actually outsold the film and won him a Global Globe and Grammy Award. Diamond became one of the most sought after tickets in the country and people started clamoring for a duet album with him and Streisand. The two sang together for the first time since they were in the same high school choir.
Neil Diamond was not able to carry on his strong sales performance of the ‘70s into the ‘80s. The soundtrack to The Jazz Singer, again panned by critics and a box office dud, sold an incredible five times platinum, but his record sales began to dip as the decade wore on. His live performance never failed to inspire though, and tickets for Diamond have never become a relic of the past.
A backswing of popularity brought Neil Diamond back into the mainstream in the ‘90s, His songs were celebrated in movies and were even inspirations at times (Saving Silverman). His albums continued to be certified gold, but he continued to a force on the stage for a whole new generation. The popular singer/songwriter reached the top of the charts for the first time in 2008 with his latest album, Home Before Dark, proving that he has not lost his touch.
