Background - Utah Jazz
It was not until the Maravich were a couple of years behind the team, that the front office made some progress. In the team's fifth season in Salt Lake City in 1984 the Utah Jazz finally made it to the playoffs. Those early playoff teams were led by Adrian Dantley, but the eighties from 1986 on served as the training ground for one of the best player combos ever in the NBA. John Stockton had been drafted in 1984 and Karl Malone was drafted in 1985.
Though the two played wonderfully in the beginning together and the Utah Jazz had one of the most formidable defensive players in the league in the giant Mark Eaton, the team was too young to overcome the more experienced Western Conference teams of the day. The nineties opened with the duo constantly set to breakout and the Utah Jazz ready to bring the NBA Finals to the EnergySolutions Arena. Jerry Sloan would take as coach and by the late nineties the Jazz were ready.
The Jazz, led by Malone and Stockton, were deep with players like Jeff Hornacek, Byron Russell, Antoine Carr, Greg Ostertag, Howard Eisley, and Shandon Anderson. The team met the Chicago Bulls twice, in 1997 and 1998, in the Finals, but could not stop the Bulls from completing their second three peat. The team is credited with being the toughest finals match up during the six championships for Chicago.
The Jazz had aged and soon began to lose the parts that had made them a contender for so long. By 2003, the team was completely reborn. Players like Andrei Kirilenko and Matt Harping went from role players to impact players. The addition of Deron Williams in 2005 and Carlos Boozer cemented the team in the postseason for the next few seasons.

 The Utah Jazz may not be the most athletic team in the league, but after the grueling regular season schedule, they are always left wit enough in the tank to make a deep playoff run. This season should be no different. Deron Williams has another season under his belt, Boozer is back, Mehmet Okurr is back, Andrei Kirilenko is healthy, and the key role players are all still there. Matt Harpring is going to be recovering from an infection after surgery on his ankle to start the season, but the team is still very deep.
The team almost made it all come together last postseason, and might have made it to the finals if it was not for Kobe Bryant. The question is whether this team will be able to play a little more defense and hack a little less and if the offense will be able to keep up its incredible efficiency for another season. Sloan has worked wonders and this season the Jazz could be in the NBA Finals again.
