San Antonio Spurs Tickets

The San Antonio Spurs are back in the 2013 NBA playoffs with a familiar trio – Manu Ginobili, Tony Parker, and Tim Duncan. This group has been together since 2001. But do not worry, San Antonio Spurs tickets are offering something different this time around.

Ginobili is the ball handler, Parker is the scoring sensation, and Duncan is the safety valve and focal point of the defense. Yes, Ginobili and Parker have switched roles. It is fitting as Ginobili’s game, when attacking the rim, makes him quite susceptible to injury. Parker is quite skilled at attacking the rim, as he remains one of the quickest point guards in the NBA. Also, Ginobili is a better outside shooter.

Of course, for the Spurs to land in the NBA Finals Kawhi Leonard has to play the role of the glue guy that holds this squad together. The Spurs need him to hit the corner three, to roam the passing lanes, and grab the rebounds Tiago Spittler is not getting to.

San Antonio Spurs History

The San Antonio Spurs were one of the founding teams in the ABA. They actually started as the Dallas Chaparrals. This stopover in Dallas lasted six seasons, and those six seasons included five trips to the playoffs. Eventually the Chaparrals moved west to San Antonio and changed their to the Spurs. That first season in a new city went relatively smoothly thanks to the George “The Iceman” Gervin.

Gervin led the Spurs to five first place finishes in the division and remained one of the few stars to stick with the ABA team after the merger of the leagues. Impressively, San Antonio played in three conference finals, though they never managed to play in the NBA Finals. The Spurs have actually spent most of their seasons in the playoffs instead of ending it in the lottery. When the team did struggle, they have managed to find a star. In the late 1980s this was David Robinson and in the late 1990s it was Tim Duncan.

As of the late 1990s, San Antonio has also been one of the few NBA teams to be able to scout foreign players. They picked up Tony Parker from France and Manu Ginobili from Argentina so that once Robinson retired the trio of Duncan-Parker-Ginobili took over. This meant that the Spurs seamlessly shifted from the NBA Finals winner in 1999 to the NBA Finals winners in the odd years in the first decade of the 21st century (2003, 2005, and 2007).

As Duncan aged, Ginobili endured more and more injuries and Parker went through a celebrity divorce. This meant Coach Gregg Popovich had to be the next person to make a shift. He focused a little less on defense and little more on an offense based on the perimeter play of Parker and Ginobili. All this has consistently kept the Spurs in the postseason, where they expect to remain for seasons to come.
