Background - Phoenix Suns
Phoenix was not a particularly impressive team on paper, with its best players being Connie Hawkins, Leonard Robinson, Alvin Adams, and Neal Walk. The Suns followed were far more impressive though, and their record after the regular season schedule illustrated that. Walter Davis, James Edwards, and others were regular 50-game winners in the early 1980s, but soon a drug scandal left the Suns reeling.
By the late 1980s, the Phoenix Suns had rebuilt. Phoenix had Tom Chambers, Kevin Johnson, Tyrone Corbin, and Dan Majerle consistently found a place in the Western Conference Finals. The trade that brought Charles Barkley over from Philadelphia put the Phoenix Suns over the edge and took the team to the NBA Finals. There, the Suns met the Chicago Bulls. The Bulls would win that 1993 NBA Finals and the team would not be able to make another run like that through the rest of the decade.
The Phoenix Suns struggled to find the right players to get back into the playoff mix, trying Jason Kidd and Stephon Marbury. Neither point guard could consistently take the Suns to the postseason. Phoenix gambled and signed Steve Nash to a multi-year deal despite the fact that he was over 30.
The risk came with a reward. The Phoenix Suns became one of the most entertaining and competitive teams in the league. Nash ran a Mike D'Antoni offense that was known for its seven seconds or less policy. Few teams could keep up with the scoring of the Suns from 2004 to 2007. The Phoenix Suns could not turn the high powered offense into an NBA Finals appearance, despite several close calls (the Spur were the main culprit).

2008-09 Midseason Update
|
 The Phoenix Suns are fighting for the final spot in the very competitive Western Conference. It may only be half way through the regular season schedule, but the fans with Suns tickets to US Airways Center know from experience in the West, the playoffs are never very far off.
The first season under Head Coach Terry Porter have seen the defense improve marginally and the offense take a big dip. The result is a Phoenix team that is 25-19 and scoring and allowing about 103 points a game.
Steve Nash is averaging a very healthy 14 points and nearly 10 assists a game, but those numbers are far below his last few seasons as the floor leader of one of the most dangerous scoring teams in the NBA. Shaq is actually playing quite well, averaging 18 points and 9 rebounds a game in 31 minutes of action, and he has freed Amare Stoudemire to move to his natural power forward position. Amare is still averaging a few less points than his best seasons and seems to have lost a step or some air as the new Suns offense slows things down considerably.
The front office brought in Jason Richardson to give fans with Suns tickets a more athletic team, but Richardson's athleticism seems lost within the more half-court oriented system. Grant Hill remains a solid all around player and Matt Barnes give the team energy.
For the first time years the team simply seems flat. If the club is to make any head way in the playoffs (if they make it) then they will have to fully accept this half court offense. Though, perhaps in slowing things down the defensive deficiencies are even more evident.
