Background - Philadelphia 76ers
The 76ers (also known as the Sixers) began play in 1946 as the Syracuse Nationals. In 1950 they played against the Minneapolis Lakers in the NBA's first championship series. The Nationals were a perennial power behind the play of forward Dolph Schayes, reaching the NBA Finals in 1954 and winning the NBA championship in 1955. The team moved to Philadelphia in 1963 and adopted its current name. In the 1966-67 season the squad included center Wilt Chamberlain, guard Hal Greer, and forwards Billy Cunningham and Chet Walker; it won 68 games and the NBA title. In the late 1970s and early 1980s the 76ers made four trips to the NBA Finals, claiming the 1983 championship.
The Syracuse Nationals joined the National Basketball League (NBL) in the 1946-47 season. Three years later six NBL franchises, including the Nationals, merged with the Basketball Association of America (BAA) to form the NBA. The Nationals won their division title in the NBA's inaugural season, 1949-50, but they lost to the Minneapolis Lakers in the first NBA Finals.
Dolph Schayes was the Nationals' first star. He led the club in scoring for 13 consecutive years and was its top rebounder for 10 seasons. In its early years the team also included player-coach Al Cervi, who first played professionally in the 1930s. The Nationals again lost to the Lakers in the 1954 NBA Finals, but the next season they defeated the Fort Wayne Pistons in seven games to capture the franchise's first NBA title.

 The 2009-2010 Philadelphia 76ers are looking to improve on last season's reasonably successful performance. Despite signing the seasoned Elton Brand last offseason, the Sixers opted to go young in the draft, with the selection of Jrue Holiday, a freshman from UCLA. Philadelphia also moved to repair their lackluster of 3-point shooting by acquiring Jason Kapono. Sixer veterans Andre Iguodala and Brand can still lead this team to the playoffs, but look for the future of Philadelphia to evolve through its youngsters, Thaddeus Young, Lou Williams, Jason Smith, Marreese Speights, and Holiday. All things considered, Philadelphia did take a 2-1 series lead against the Orlando Magic in the first round of the Eastern Conference playoffs, before succumbing to their inside power and reliable perimeter shooting, which kept the 76ers from providing much of a threat for the remainder of the seven-game series even though it did last six games. While the Sixers may have failed to get out of the first round of the playoffs for yet another year, when compared to many teams in the NBA, everyone needs to realize that their problems could have been much worse. The Sixers have Elton Brand coming back from his shoulder injury, and also possess an athletic scorer in Andre Iguodala, but it remains to be seen if Lou Williams, Thaddeus Young, and Willie Green, will be able to step up with maybe one of them taking on more of a leadership role. In conjunction with Iguodala, there will be stretches where Brand will have to create scoring opportunities for much of the season under first-year coach Eddie Jordan. While this may be good enough against the NBA's weaker clubs, it probably will not cut it against the big boys. New acquisition Jason Kapono, the best pure shooter on the Sixers' roster, will have to consistently drain shots in order to give them the spacing they so desperately need, but with Kapono's less than spectacular defense, the coach will find himself making a lot of situational substitutions as the year progresses. Will the Philadelphia 76ers make the transition to a more youthful lineup will reaming successful? The team and coaches think so and are driven to prove just that.
