Background - Orlando Magic
The Magic fared well in the NBA draft during the franchise's first five years, selecting guard-forward Nick Anderson (1989), forward Dennis Scott (1990), center Shaquille O'Neal (1992), and guard Anfernee 'Penny' Hardaway (1993). These young stars popularized the franchise and propelled the Magic to the 1995 NBA Finals. O'Neal in particular was an immediate force in the NBA, ranking among the league's top scorers in each of his four seasons with the team.
The Magic joined the NBA as part of a four-team, two-year expansion. The Miami Heat and the Charlotte Hornets began play during the 1988-89 season, and the Magic and the Minnesota Timberwolves joined the league a year later.
Orlando won only 18 games in its first season, but with rookie Dennis Scott joining Nick Anderson and veteran point guard Scott Skiles in the 1990-91 season, the team improved its win-loss record to 31-51. The Magic's luck in drafting top players continued in 1992, when the franchise won the rights to the number-one pick in that year's draft of college players. The club selected Shaquille O'Neal, a 7-ft 1-in (2.1-m), 301-lb (136.5-kg) center who left Louisiana State University after his junior year.

2008-09 Midseason Update

 The leading team in the Southwest Division halfway through the season is the Orlando Magic. This is no surprise. The 35-10 record is though. The Magic have become a force in the NBA as Dwight Howard has blossomed into a great center now. He gets double teamed, opening up things for his teammates. He is leading the league in rebounds with 13.9 a game and he is running away with the league lead for blocks with 3.14 (the closest has 2.57 a game and the closest after that has 2.07).
The Magic average 102.3 points a game and only give up 94.1. This is one of the best offensive and defensive clubs out there. Orlando excites fans at Amway Arena with more than just Howard. Add Hedo Turkoglu and Rashard Lewis and you have one of the most versatile front courts in the league. Turkoglu and Lewis can stroke it from outside, drive, and Lewis is great in the post. They are both not great rebounders, but with Howard near by who needs to worry about that?
Jameer Nelson is in the running for the Most Improved Player of the season with his 17 points and 5.4 assists a game. Mickael Pietrus has been injured, but has been effective when on the court. Keith Bogans and rookie Courtney Lee have done stellar jobs filling in at shooting guard.
This team will take the fans playoff tickets to the conference semi-finals if not the conference or league finals. The only real concern for the team is its lack of depth. Anthony Johnson, Tony Battie, and Marcin Gortat do not inspire much confidence if one of the key players gets in foul trouble.
Still the experience Lee has had will make him far more prepared for a playoff push late in the schedule and perhaps make him an unspoken hero with his incredible shooting stroke in the postseason.
