First the superstar center got the beloved head coach fired, then General Manager Rob Hennigan tried to clean up the mess left by the previous GM and completed one of the worst trades in the history of the NBA. Now, Orlando Magic for the 2012-2013 season at the Amway Center offer little more than chance to see just who is worth keeping as the rebuilding (in terms of both the roster and the emotional state of basketball in central Florida).

New head coach Jacque Vaughn has inherited a difficult task. He is the man roaming the bench in a suit as the Orlando Magic become Hedo Turkoglu’s team. Vaughn’s first job is going to stop the impending fight for the ball between Hedo and Jameer Nelson. Nelson is a decent point guard and Hedo may be overpaid, but Hedo is still the most talented player on the roster. He can take the ball, hold it above his head at the elbow and make something happen. Vaughn second task is to get the rest of the roster to move without the ball so Turkoglu can use his vision to keep the club in games.

Vaughn may even consider moving Hedo to the four and starting Quentin Richardson at small forward since a team with Glen Davis starting at power forward playing off center Gustavo Ayon is less enticing. Really, this is a team in a competition for the right to draft Cody Zeller with the first pick in the 2013 NBA draft. Zeller would come and start at center right away, quickly filling the void. Zeller is not Howard though. His game is favorably compared to LaMarcus Aldridge.

If the Magic could add him to the roster and rid the roster if its wasteful contracts, then the rebuilding process, though still long, would seem much shorter with an immediate sense of hope. Until then, the Orlando Magic will be spending the 2012-2013 schedule fighting for the pride of the franchise and trying to clear the locker room of any bitterness or ill will left by the “Dwighmare”.
