Orlando Magic 2009 Playoffs

Orlando Magic

The Orlando Magic entered the league in 1988 and within a few seasons put together a team that they thought could start a dynasty of their own. That team was led by a young Shaquille O’Neal and a tall point guard in Penny Hardaway. The two player were the first great center/guard combinations for Shaq. His immense size and athleticism made him the rare prized big man. He could block shots, score around the basketball, and rebound with his powerful frame. The addition of Penny a year later in 1993 gave the Magic two young stars. Penny could run the fast break, shoot, drive, and use his 6 foot 7 height to post up other point guards. Their first season together was the franchises first shot at playoff tickets. For three seasons they quickly ascended the ranks of the Eastern Conference. Jordan had left the league and Magic were in prime position to capitalize. They went the finals in 1995 but lost to the Houston Rockets and went to the conference finals in 1996 but lost to the Bulls as they began their next three-peat. The window passed, O’Neal left through free agency, and the team began to try and put a competitive team together.

At the beginning of the 21st century Orlando had Magic playoff tickets to three first round losses. The end had come and the realization that the team had to start over could no longer be ignored. That rebuilding effort would include another big man. Dwight Howard was a monster out of high school that the Magic could simply not pass up in 2004. He was the next star in the making. His development as a dominant big man led to postseason runs in 2007 and 2008. He went from raw high school product to a low post force whose quickness made him almost impossible to guard. Rashard Lewis and Hedo Turkoglu helped make the 2008 run memorable. The team won 52 games during the regular season and went to the second round before falling to the Detroit Pistons.

The 2008-09 season features much of the same team. Howard, Lewis, and Turkoglu make up the dangerous front court. Howard is only going to get better as he learns the tricks of the trade. The pairing of a player with his athletic ability with the skills a veteran low post player makes him a sight to believe. Lewis and Turkoglu are three point threats who can also move without the ball. Lewis may leave as little to hope on defense and on the boards, but his ability to spread the court is perhaps more valuable. The problem last season was the backcourt. Jameer Nelson needs to pass more this season. His shoot first mentality is not needed on a team with three talented frontcourt players who can put up big numbers. The addition of Michael Pietrus gives some much needed toughness to the guards. That is about all he brings though. He is good in the full court game, but is not a particularly good shooter. The Magic almost certainly have playoff tickets at the end of the regular season schedule, but for the team to go far Nelson has to reach the next step in his development. The season at Amway Arena will fun, but the postseason will be much more interesting.
