Indiana Pacers 2009 Playoffs

Prior to their life in the NBA, the Indiana Pacers were a star franchise from the ABA that won three championships. In those days playoff tickets were in abundance as the Pacers dominated the upstart league. After the merger of the ABA and the NBA the times became tougher for the club. Though, the franchise was chosen because it was able to keep a stable fan base, the team was struggling. It was not until the ‘90s that the Pacers and Indiana became part of the cream of the crop again. Reggie Miller was the first piece of the puzzle to arrive in 1987. The 7 foot 4 Rick Smits came the next season and Detlef Schrempf was the next. For seasons the team went to the postseason as a lower seed, but after Larry Brown came over and Mark Jackson became the point guard the team ascended the pecking order in the Eastern Conference. The Pacers were constantly foiled in the Conference Finals, but finally made it to the NBA Finals in 2000. The Lakers began their Kobe Bryant-Shaq dynasty in the series, but the Pacers put up a fight, losing in six games.
The Pacers have struggled since. Trying to rebuild around youth like Jermaine O’Neal and Jamal Tinsley while keeping the shooting of Reggie Miller on the roster, the Indiana Pacers were still able to produce playoff tickets for the Conseco Fieldhouse. The team reached first place in the Central Division in the 2003-04 season, but the lineup that now also had Brad Miller and Ron Artest could not overcome the Pistons in the conference finals. The next two seasons saw the team play alright in the regular season, but the Pacers were coming apart. After the brawl in 2004 the team ended their time as contenders for the NBA Title. The roster was traded away for the most part or riddled by injuries.
Indiana Pacers Background
This season’s Indiana Pacers offer a new beginning. With Jermaine O’Neal gone, Danny Granger is able to continue his star development. He has been proving that Donnie Walsh knows his stuff since he was chose in the 2005 draft. The player can score, rebound, and defend. Jim O’Brien will need every contest on the 82-game schedule to mold this team. T.J. Ford is the new point guard. He needs this new start to prove he can go without injury for an entire season. The lightening quick point guard has been a good facilitator when he has been healthy. His choices include Mike Dunleavy, a player who finally began to make good on the promise that led him to be drafted in 2002. Troy Murphy may not give you much defense, but he does have a good shot from anywhere on the floor. Jeff Foster is a rebounding machine. He cannot shoot, but he has a knack for the ball. He is also a decent defender. The Pacers hope for playoff tickets depends on these five finding a way to act as a cohesive unit. The bench has some potential with Brandon Rush and Shawne Williams, but this team has to define the roles before they can start dreaming about the NBA Championship.
