Background - Miami Heat
The Heat entered the NBA in 1988 when the league granted an expansion team franchise to a group of investors that included Ted Arison, Lewis Schaffel, and former Philadelphia 76ers star Billy Cunningham. The franchise used its 1988 draft picks to select center Rony Seikaly, guard Kevin Edwards, and forward Grant Long.
The Heat lost the first 17 games of its 1988-89 debut season, setting an NBA record for the most losses to begin a season. Finishing the year with a 15-67 win-loss record, Miami used its poor finish to its advantage, selecting forward Glen Rice and guard Sherman Douglas in the 1989 NBA draft. The club's record slowly improved over the next few years. During the 1991-92 season the team registered a 38-44 record, qualifying for its first playoff appearance. The inexperienced Heat, however, were defeated by the Chicago Bulls in the first round in three straight games.
The Heat returned to the playoffs in 1993-94 by posting a 42-40 win-loss record, the team's first winning season. Rice led the team in offense, scoring 21.1 points per game. In the playoffs Miami lost to the Atlanta Hawks in the first round, three games to two.
The Heat made several personnel moves during the 1994-95 season, trading Seikaly and Long and adding forward-center Kevin Willis to the roster. The team's ownership also changed when the Arison family bought out both Schaffel and Cunningham for controlling interest of the franchise. Despite the changes and the high scoring of both Willis and Rice, the team finished the season with a record of 32-50.

2008-09 Midseason Update
|
The great Shawn Marion is over and it has failed. The thought when trading Shaq for the X Factor was that Wade might find a running mate worth signing. Well, Mr. X's contract expires after this season and his 12 points and 9 boards are far from multi-year deal numbers for a player who is 30.
Meanwhile the Miami Heat have been anything but a disappointment at American Airlines Arena. Dwayne Wade is healthy and has played amazing basketball throughout the season schedule so far. Anybody with Heat tickets can attest his return to superstardom. Wade has averaged a league-leading 28.5 points a game, five boards, a team-leading 7.2 assists, 2.23 steals (second in the league), and 1.5 blocks. The Heat are 25-19 and will not be repeating as a lottery team this season.
Rookie forward Michael Beasley has proven he can score, but has a long way to go on boards and as a defender. This is not a surprise and it is not a bad omen. He is a rookie. In fact the fact is that Wade has four more double digit scorers. It would be nice if one of them could average closer to 20 points than 10, and the Heat will need one to if the Heat playoff tickets are to go very far.
The Heat have responded to the lack of scoring by becoming a top ten defending team, allowing only 95.7 points a game (they only score 86.4). The team loses the rebound battle a little too often, so if Joel Anthony, Udonis Haslem, or Beasley would like to become double digit rebounders the time is now.
I think the team will struggle a little bit further down the schedule as Wade finally starts to tire after playing for the Olympic team and carrying Miami thus far. Someone will ultimately need to step up for this team to go very far.
