Miami Heat

Miami Heat History

The Miami Heat are one of four expansion teams to be added to the National Basketball Association in the late 1980s. Of those four, the Heat are undeniably the most successful, having won a couple championships and kept and courted a superstar. They now boast the efforts of LeBron James and Dwyane Wade and they seem likely to add at least one more championship before this dynamic duo shed the Heat uniform.

It took a while for the franchise to get to this point. At first they were stuck at the bottom of the standings, but very early in the team’s history the front office acquired a host of shockingly effective shooters. Glen Rice and Steve Smith kept the perimeter defense in shambles. This got them into the postseason, but it was not until the addition of Alonzo Mourning and Tim Hardaway on the court and Pat Riley on the bench and in the front office that the Miami Heat became perpetual Atlantic Division winners.

The Mourning-Hardaway years did not end in a championship. That would come when a young Wade recklessly drove to the rim at will and an older but still at-times dominant Shaq teamed up in 2005. That first year together led to an incredible postseason run and the franchise’s first NBA championship. Shaq soon left as he endured annual injuries, but Wade remained.

For four years he struggled to hold the team together, but he was rewarded with a huge offseason in 2010, when LeBron James and Chris Bosh came to Miami. The first season with the super trio the club went to the finals and fell, but the second they returned and won. More finals are sure to come and this time will go down as an NBA dynasty and the Golden Age for the Heat.
