Golden State Warriors

Golden State History

The Golden State Warriors are an intriguing NBA team. They played in Philadelphia from 1946 to 1962 and dominated with Paul Arizin, Neil Johnston, and Wilt Chamberlain. Ultimately, the Warriors moved to the West Coast, first finding a home in San Francisco. The team eventually crossed the bridge to play in Oakland and became the Golden State Warriors.

In both San Francisco and Oakland the team enjoyed building the roster around Rick Barry. A frustrating star, he could score at will and helped the team win its third championship (the previous two came in the pre-Wilt years in Phiily). Barry could not play forever though. He could not alter his game any more than he already had (he began his career as a scorer and rebounder and became a ball handler and outside shooter) and he had to give into retirement in 1980.

Post-Barry, the Golden State Warriors were a struggling team. The franchise could not seem to find the right talent to challenge the likes of the Lakers or, in many seasons, post a winning record. This changed in the late 1980s. By then the Sleepy Floyd-era had faded and the Run TMC era had begun. Tim Hardaway, Mitch Richmond, and Chris Mullin embraced Don Nelson’s focus on offense and the Warriors became a consistent playoff participant.

The lack of defensive effort prompted a coaching change by the middle of the 1990s. The roster changed too, but the locker room became an acrimonious place. Despite the talent of Latrell Sprewell and Chris Webber, incidents forced the front office to move these players and accept futility. Today the team is counting on the phenomenal shooting of Stephen Curry to lead the team back to the postseason consistently and, perhaps, to the NBA Finals.
