The National Symphony Orchestra is committed strongly to the development of the artistic resources of the America. The Orchestras has commissioned more that 50 works, which has been done through the John and June Hechinger Commissioning Fund for New Orchestral Works. These includes the cycles of fanfares and encores, which, when taken as a whole, represents the diverse influences in American composition in present times. The National Symphony has been known for nurturing the talents of the young American conductors, for many years. They have also established the National Conducting Institute in the year 2000. The institute has been founded by Leonard Slatkin who is at present the music director of the institute. The institute has done commendable job throughout these past few years by combining administration with leadership and musical training which in turn results in a major orchestra. The Institute is an advanced training program that has been designed to help the conductors to make transition from an amateur student or part-time orchestras to working with a full-time professional orchestra. Not only this, the scholarships which are provided by the National Trustees of the National Symphony Orchestra have helped the students of high school, who comes from throughout the country, to come and join the orchestra for several weeks of study with NSO musicians.

The next important project is the National Symphony Orchestra American Residencies for the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. It was established in the year 1992 and shares all the important elements of classical symphonic music, through training programs, commissions and exchanges, in 15 states. The National Symphony Orchestra has served the nation through broadcasts, tours, and many other special projects.

The music directors of The National Symphony Orchestra are Hans Kindler (1931–1949), Howard Mitchell (1949–1969), Antal Doráti (1970–1977), Mstislav Rostropovich (1977–1994), Leonard Slatkin (1996–).
