National Finals Rodeo 2013

December 5 - 14, 2013

Thomas & Mack Center, Las Vegas

It did not take long after Trevor Brazile was named all-around champion (again) before the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association announced the dates for the 2013 National Finals Rodeo. This 54th edition of the Super Bowl of rodeo will take place from December 5th to the 14th.

Once again National Finals Rodeo tickets will bring hundreds of thousands of rodeo fans to the Thomas and Mack Center in Las Vegas. This may be the penultimate appearance in Sin City. The current contract runs out in 2014 and Oklahoma City is making a strong bid to bring rodeo back to a part of the country more traditionally associated with the art of the cowboy. This next NFR has to be amazing for the city built as an oasis for entertainment to keep this incredible event. Luckily this competition rarely fails to be anything short of captivating.

Way back in 1958 the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association decided it needed to organize a major event to truly place the spotlight on the sport it represented. The result would be the National Finals Rodeo. The professional sports association invited the top money earners in the tournaments it recognized over the course of the year to compete over the course of 10-days in seven events.

Those events include bareback riding, steer wrestling, team roping, saddle bronc riding, tie-down roping, barrel racing, and bull riding. In the years since bull riding has gained particular fame, especially after the Luke Perry movie, 8 Seconds. True rodeo fans love all the sports and they have traveled to each of the NFRs locales.

Those locations include Dallas, Los Angeles, and Oklahoma City. Dallas and Los Angeles were short lived spots before Oklahoma City and its fairgrounds became the home from 1964 until the mid-1980s. Las Vegas would steal the Super Bowl of Rodeo away in 1985.

The city has seemed an odd home for cowboys and cattle, but the cowboy culture has embraced the many casino and resorts along the Strip and those off the strip. The Thomas and Mack Center has quickly become the celebrated home of this event, with Ty Murray and Trevor Brazille first bursting onto the scene at this venue. Stayed tuned and see the next superstar begin his run at greatness in the middle of the desert.
