Murray Perahia is an American concert pianist born in the Bronx on April 19, 1947. He is renowned for his consistency, whether in sound, technique, or interpretation. The child of a Sephardi Jewish couple, his first language was Ladino, not English. He managed to eventually learn English, but was able to master the universal language of music after beginning to learn the piano at the age of four. It was not until the age of 15 that he began to take the ac if playing the piano seriously. By the age of 17 he was studying keyboard, conducting, and composition at Mannes College in the Upper West Side of Manhattan with his mentor Mieczyslaw Horszowski. The duet with Serkin earned Perahia an assistantship at the Curtis Institute in Philadelphia. Perahia tickets would not become tremendous sellers for a few years, and it was his award winning performance at the Leeds Piano Competition that won him respect and started his professional career as a concert musician.

Murray Perahia has recorded his work since 1986 and has performed works of Schubert, Mozart, Beethoven, Brahms, Schumann, and Chopin marvelously. He has been involved in the Aldeburgh Festival in 1973 and has collaborated with Vladimir Horowitz since the 1980s.
