Motörhead was formed by Kilmister. Initially, he decided to name the new band, as Bastard. But his manager Doug Smith, told him that with a name like 'Bastard', they would hardly appear in the charts. Smith words had a positive effect and later they decided to name the band as Motörhead. Throughout the years, the band has undergone many changes. The first line-up consisted of Larry Wallis from the Pink Fairies band on electric guitar and Lucas Fox as the drummer. They performed their first gig at The Roundhouse, London, in the year 1975. They started carrying out their recorded sessions at Rockfield Studios in Monmouth. After some time Fox left, and was later replaced by drummer Phil "Philthy Animal" Taylor.
"Fast" Eddie Clarke, joined as the guitarist. After some time Wallis left. At present, the trio of Kilmister, Clarke, and Taylor is regarded as one of the "classic" and best Motörhead line-up. In the year 1977, the band released its first official album, "Motörhead". They embarked on tour and due to their improved performances and the nature of the music, which was a blend of both metal and punk, they garnered favorable responses from the listeners and as a result their self-titled album became a hit. It was followed by two more albums, "Overkill" and "Bomber" which was also a huge hit and these albums established the band to be a force to reckon to. They became one of the forerunners in the group of heavy metal.
The 80's proved to be an eventful year for the band. They released many singles and EPs, such as "Ace of Spades", "Motörhead (live)", "Iron Fist", The Golden Years and the St. Valentine's Day Massacre EP (their collaboration with 'apprentices' Girlschool), all of which appeared in the UK Top 40 chart hits. The album "Ace of Spades" and the live No Sleep 'til Hammersmith, was regarded by their fans to be one of the best works till date. The album "No Sleep 'til Hammersmith" was considered to be one of the best works of the era and this album was commercial success also.

In the year 1982, the band recorded and released, "Stand By Your Man". The album was a cover version of the classic of the Tammy Wynette along with Wendy O. Williams and the Plasmatics. After some time, Clarke left the band and he was replaced by Brian Robertson, who was with the band Thin Lizzy.
Along with Robertson, the band released their next album, "Another Perfect Day" in the year 1983. After some time, Robertson left the band. He was replaced by Würzel and Phil Campbell (ex-Persian Risk), on guitars.
In 1984, Kilmister, Campbell, Würzel and Taylor played their favorite tune "Ace of Spades" in "Bambi", which was an episode of the British sitcom, The Young Ones. After that event, Taylor left the band and was replaced by Pete Gill, who was the member of Saxon. But in the year 1987, Taylor returned to Motörhead in and played with the group till 1992. In 1992, he was fired from the band and he was replaced by Mikkey Dee.
Motörhead are famous in the professional wrestling community as they have performed the popular wrestler Triple H's entrance music, "The Game", from Christmas 2000. In the year 2005, the band was awarded the Grammy Award in the category of "Best Metal Performance" for their cover of Metallica's "Whiplash". In the same year the band along with Mötley Crüe performed together an encore onstage of the popular Sex Pistols song, "Anarchy in the UK", in Perth, Western Australia.
In the year 2006, Motörhead released their next album "Kiss of Death".
