Monster Energy AMA Supercross

The upcoming 2013 Monster Energy AMA Motocross begins on May 18, 2013 at the Hangtown Motocross Classic in Sacramento, California. This is the first of 12 races scheduled between this May date and August 24, 2013. Fans are excited to purchase Monster Energy AMA Motocross tickets to each of these events.

This season it will likely be a battle between Ryan Villopoto and Ryan Dungey in the 450 Class. One of the Ryans has topped the points standings for the 450 class in the last three years. However, if the Supercross season is any indication, they will be trying to hold off David Millsaps. The Supercross winner has traditionally faired quite well in the AMA Motocross Championship, so this may very well be Millsaps year to take both AMA series. Millsaps has yet to have a bad race in Supercross, as opposed to Dungey and Villlopoto. Over on the women’s side, most fans assume Ashley Fiolek will win her third straight points title.

Monster Energy AMA Motocross is the motorcycle sport that takes place after the Supercross season is over. It gives those who had broken through in the arenas across the nation a chance to continue their domination of tight turns and big jumps. Only, this time the tracks are not torn down to make way for the next major sporting event or the next big concert in indoor arenas. Monster Energy AMA Motocross tracks are permanent structures and are typically constructed outside in the open air. That makes this a marque series for motorcycle racing enthusiasts during the pleasant months in late spring and throughout the summer.

The American Motorcycle Association began this league in the 1970s, when the popularity of motorcycle racing had finally crossed the Atlantic Ocean. These races had been popular in the United Kingdom since the beginning of the 20th century and had become popular in Europe soon after.  It would only be a matter of time until the United States would discover the thrill of motocross. So, when the first official season was held in 1972, it enjoyed a great wave of support. The support would wane in the 1980s, but only because the next generation of motorcycle racing fans were still kids. They would race themselves and, once they came of age, Motocross’s popularity would again boom.

The season typically consists of 12 races scheduled from May to September. Each of these races runs in heats for three divisions, two for men and one for women. The men compete in either the 250 (junior) division or the 450 (premier) division. The women’s 450 division is currently the only racing division for women on the circuit. All these divisions run in heats, like Supercross.  The winners from the first two heats advance to a final race and a consolation race allows a couple racers who were initially eliminated a second chance to race in this final run. This makes it necessary to watch every heat in a Motocross event.
