Background - World Series Baseball
The fall classic began way back in 1903 after the National League and the upstart American League each declared themselves the best and raided the stock of talented players in both leagues. The first World Series was an exhibition game that was supposed to usher in a new era of peace between the established National League and the new American League. Fans with tickets to the games saw the Boston club from the AL with a pitching staff led by Cy Young beat the Pittsburgh Pirates from the National League. The victory officially announced the arrival of the AL as a true contender to the NL.
Despite the early AL victory, all the teams in the NL were not convinced of the validity of the series. After a boycott of the 1904 series by New York Giants of the NL, the Brush rules were established to give the exhibition a solid set of rules and solidify the series in both leagues. After that year World Series tickets would be sold every year but in 1994, when a players strike interrupted the season.
The early history of the World Series ironically pointed to the domination of the White Sox, the Red Sox, and the Cubs. After the White Sox threw the series in 1919 those fortunes began to change. The White Sox, forever tarred with the Black Sox Scandal, and the Red Sox, who made the infamous trade that sent Babe Ruth to the Yankees, would have to wait until the 21st century to win another World Series. The Yankees and the Cardinals would start a long history of selling World Series tickets at the beginning of the "Live Ball" era after failing to reach the series or really any level of contention until the 1920s.
Those trends and curses have been seemingly reset with the turn of the century. The Yankees have struggled to continue the domination that had them winning 26 of 39 World Series in the 20th century, the White Sox and Red Sox have broken their curses, and a host of expansion teams have been in serious contention and even won the World Series. The established order has been broken and now nobody knows who they will be buying tickets for on the World Series schedule.

2008 World Series Preview
|
 The season is coming to a close quickly and with only one division secured this post season is still undecided. Who will come out of the American League? The Los Angeles Angels have a commanding lead in the AL West that will not likely be overcome. The East has boiled down to either the surprising Tampa Bay Rays or the preseason favorites Boston Red Sox. The Central is a neck and neck race between the White Sox and the Twins. At this point which team will win the division is just as much a mystery as who the Wild Card will be. The Yankees could even make a late season run at World Series tickets through the Wild Card.
The National League is just as unclear. It appears that the Chicago Cubs are about to run away with the Central, but the Brewers and the Cardinals are still hanging around on the fringes of contention. In fact it looks likely that the Wild Card will go to one of those two teams so the Cubs could see their own division this fall on the way to the World Series. Much has been made about the timely run by the Cubs (this is the 100th anniversary of their last World Series victory), but the teams out East and in the West are still fighting for a chance at World Series tickets. Right now the schedule is full of meaningful games for the Mets, Phillies, and the Marlins in the East and the Diamondbacks and the Dodgers in the West.
The World Series is just around the corner and the leagues and the divisions are still going strong as this season has been one of the most highly contested in years past. Where World Series tickets will end up going is unknown and will not be decided until the series starts in late October.
