 The St. Louis Cardinals came through in a big way, stealing the NL Central in a year that was supposed to begin rebuilding. Instead, the baseball team played wonderfully balanced baseball, driving in the seventh most runs and allowing the seventh least. The Cards went 91-71 and won the division by 7.5 games over the second place Chicago Cubs. The fans at Busch Stadium were ecstatic as Albert Pujols went after the Triple Crown and the team went into postseason. In the end, the Cardinals season ended in three straight losses as the Los Angeles Dodgers advanced to the NLCS. As mentioned before St. Louis Cardinals first baseman Albert Pujols had a terrific season. He hit .327, led the majors in home runs with 47, and had 135 RBI. Pujols hitting and RBI total were good enough for third in the NL, falling .16 points and 7 RBI short of a Triple Crown Award. Another offensive force that must be mentioned is Matt Holliday. A midseason trade brought the third baseman (who moved to left field) over from the Oakland Athletics. He finished out the 2009 season in the National League with a .353 batting average, a .419 OBP, 13 homeruns, and 55 RBI in 63 games. He seemed to be the last piece to make the Cardinals batting order one of the most dangerous in the league. Second baseman Skip Schumaker, right fielder Ryan Ludwick, and catcher Yadier Molina helped round out that lineup. The pitching was superb for St. Louis. Starters Chris Carpenter (17-4, 2.24 ERA), Adam Wainwright (19-8, 2.63 ERA), and Joel Pineiro (15-12, 3.49 ERA) anchored the starting rotation. Ryan Franklin dominated on the mound as the closer (38 saves, 1.92 ERA) with set up help from Blake Hawksworth and Trevor Miller. This simply was the complete team. The first round sweep was unfortunate, but this team is ready to repeat as NL Central champions and is looking to add a starting pitcher, some relief help, and maybe a good power hitter to help them reach the 2010 World Series.
