Background - San Diego Padres
The winning started picking up in the 1980s. In 1984, after two 81-81 seasons, the San Diego rewarded those with Padres tickets with a rip to the World Series. That same year Tony Gwynn won his first batting trophy. He and Steve Garvey, Gary Templton, and Alan Wiggins won the National League West, came back from an 0-2 deficit to beat the Cubs, and lost to the Tigers after the engine ran out of fuel.
The Padres would occasionally put up a fight, but not return to the World Series until 1998. Tony Gwynn, Ken Caminiti, Wally Joyner, Greg Vaughn, and Steve Finley provided the offense and Kevin Brown, Andy Ashby, and Trevor Hoffman provided the mound support. The Yankees ended the championship bid, and Padres tickets once again were available for a struggling team that played in beautiful weather.

2009 Season Preview
|
 PETCO Park was not the place to be in 2008. The San Diego Padres finished 62-99 and in last place in the NL West. The team had problem making contact and finding enough quality starts to put a winning streak together. If anything, Padres tickets were good for enjoying the pleasant weather in Southern California.
For 2009 to be any different the offense will have to do a better job rallying around Adrian Gonzalez and Kevin Kouzmanoff. It is sad that though fans with Padres tickets were able to watch Gonzalez hit 36 homeruns and drive in 119 runs and Kouzmanoff hit 23 homeruns. These are solid young stars for a team that had little else to add to the scoreboard. The Padres will open the season after an offseason of trying to cut costs. That means that the two stars will need the young players to step and the lone elder statesman, Brian Giles, to play like he is approaching 30, not 40.
Currently Jake Peavy is still on the roster. He is young and should have had more than 10 wins with a 2.85 ERA. He leads a starting rotation full of names that are bound to change as countless minor league prospects are brought up to try and stop the bleeding. Heath Bell is apparently the best option at closer after two solid years as middle relief. Basically, for Padres tickets to be anything more than just a nice time during the season schedule, their will have to be a developmental explosion.
