The Philadelphia Phillies made a gallant effort this season, returning to the World Series after starting off slow and picking up a couple of pitchers, but the New York Yankees ultimately laid the baseball team to rest in six games to end the 2009 World Series. The Phillies can still celebrate the fact they win the NL East with a 93-69 record and beat out the Los Angeles Dodgers for the National League pennant.

As a team, over the 162-game schedule, the Phillies were typified by a team that could bash the baseball out of the park to finish first in runs scored and slugging percentage in the National League. The scary part is that despite an average on base percentage, they posed a huge threat because of the speed on the base paths. The Phillies, as a whole, stole 119 bases, good for second in the National League.

The pitching kicked up a notch by the end of the season thanks to the additions of Cliff Lee and Pedro Martinez to the roster, but the rest of the starters struggled. J.A. Happ became the most reliable starter as a convert reliever before the other two arrived. Happ finished the season with a 12-4 record and 2.93 ERA in 23 starts and 35 total games pitched. Joe Blanton pitched alright, but Cole Hamels simply did not show up as the staff ace.

Add the issues in the bullpen to the fire, as Brad Lidge broke down at the end of the season, finishing the year with a 7.21 ERA. The Phillies team entered the postseason on a roll, but eventually simply proved unable to stop the Yankees hitting.

Citizens Ball Park will have a few boo birds at the beginning of the 2010 MLB season, but the Phillies should be the favorite in the division and have a pretty good shot at reaching the World Series for a third time in a row. Philadelphia Phillies tickets will be hard to find as fans hope Ryan Howard will have found his swing over the winter.
