Background - Cincinnati Reds
The Cincinnati Reds, the oldest professional baseball team in the league, began their history in 1863 with the pure domination of the baseball. The club won 130 straight games from 1869 to 1870. The modern Reds have not been able to match that feat, but they have been able to produce memorable eras of their own.
Perhaps the best remembered is the Big Red Machine of the 1970s. The Reds won four National League pennants and back to back World Series in that decade. The period began with the hiring of a then little known George "Sparky" Anderson as manager. He would begin his tenure by winning the 70 of his first 100 games. The offense was powered by Johnny Bench, one of the greatest hitting catcher of all time; Tony Perez a power hitting player who played first and third base; and Pete Rose, the career hits leader.
The pitching staff could not carry its regular season success into the post season and the Reds lost in five to the Baltimore Orioles in the World Series. Following the only losing season that decade in the 1972, the Reds again captured the NL West title in 1972 and 1973. The club was helped by the additions of power-hitting second baseman Joe Morgan, defensive stalwart Cesar Geronimo, left fielder George Foster, and pitcher Jack Billingham. Dave Concepcion also developed at shortstop to round out the famous roster. Ken Griffey, Sr was the last of the position players to join the Big Red Machine in 1973.
In 1975 the Reds would win their first World Series in 35 years. The series is best known for the dramatic game six against the Red Sox. The Reds were within five outs of winning the series when Bernie Carbo hit his second pitch-hit home run in the series for the Red Sox. The game would go into the 12th inning and be won by a solo shot by Carlton Fisk of the Red Sox that bounced fair off the foul pole in left. The win would force a game seven, which the Reds would win on Joe Morgan's RBI single.
The next season the Reds would repeat as champions with a sweep of the Yankees in the World Series. Management began breaking up the team soon after leading to a resentful fan base. That resentful feeling was further embittered after Pete Rose was exposed for betting on his own team while he was manager. Owner Marge Schott would create further tension with her history of alleged ethnic and racial slurs.
The Reds would rebound from the consistent line of bad news and rifts in 1990, when the ball club went wire to wire in the NL East in first place. The team featured Chris Sabo, Barry Larkin, Eric Davis, and Paul O'Neill in the lineup and Rob Dibble, Norm Charlton, and Randy Myers in the starting rotation. The team continued to shock the league by sweeping the favored Athletics in the World Series.

2008 Season Preview
|
The 2008 Cincinnati Reds hope to improve on a dreadful 2007. The starting rotation features Aaron Harang and Brandon Arryo and a number of unknowns. If the game is close and late, Francicso Cordero is a super solid closer who will not give up the lead.
Adam Dunn and Ken Griffey, Jr. are the team's stars, but second baseman Brandon Phillips had a breakout year that only Reds fans seem to know about. He hit 30 home runs and stole 30 bases.
The hitter friendly Great American Ball Park may help the rest of the lineup, but only the season will tell if the Reds will be able to offer some serious competition in the NL Central. The season gives fans an 81-game home schedule to check the team out, so get cheap Cincinnati Reds' tickets at www.OnlineSeats.com.
