Background - Atlanta Braves
The Braves two claims to fame are the years with Hank Aaron and the successful run from 1991-2005. Hank Aaron started his career with the Milwaukee Braves and moved with the team to Atlanta in 1966. His spectacular and steady career drew national attention in 1974 when he broke Babe Ruth's career home run record. That game on April 8, 1974 saw an audience of 53,775 show up to celebrate as Aaron hit home run number 715 off of Dodgers' pitcher Al Downing. Aaron would leave the organization at the end of the 1974 season having hit 733 for the ball club.
The Atlanta Braves were known as the "Team of the ‘90s" as they won 14 consecutive National League east division titles and went to the World Series five times, capturing the title in 1995 in a 15 year span from 1991 to 2005. Bobby Cox managed the club during that entire era, building a team around great starting pitching and incredible offensive stars.
Tom Glavine, Steve Avery, and John Smoltz were the homegrown pitchers that provided the base of the starting rotation for most of those years. The rotation would get some help from Greg Maddux from the Cubs during that period as well. That amazing rotation won six Cy Young Awards in the ‘90s. Glavine would win in 1991 and 1998, Smoltz would win 1996, and Madux would three in a row, from 1993 to 1995.
The position players were also stacked with the likes of David Justice, Ron Gant, and Chipper Jones. The club would win the only World Series in that period in the shortened 1995 season, beating the Cleveland Indians.

2008 Season Preview
|
 The Braves may be in the last season before an all out rebuilding period. Bobby Cox will manage his last season and John Schuerholz, the general manager who built the "Team of the ‘90s," has retired.
John Smoltz and Tom Glavine return to lead the starting rotation again. Despite their age, the two managed to finish within the top five for quality starts last season in the NL. Veteran Mike Hampton and Tim Hudson take the middle of the rotation. Hampton has not pitched in two years and will be a question mark this season.
Mark Teixeira and Chipper Jones will have to carry the offense this season. The Braves hope Brain McCann returns to 2006 form, when his average was 63 pints higher and his slugging percentage was .960, not .772 like last season.
