Kansas City Royals vs San Francisco Giants

The current game known as the World Series is over a century old and has great history, but it is not the original. The original World Series took place in the 19th century and matched the champions of the National League and the bitter rival American Association.

The idea of pitting the champions of two rival leagues proved a popular concept and once the National League found itself competing for fans and players with the American League at the beginning of the 20th century, it would only be a matter of time until the World Series was brought back. Officially, the first modern World Series was played in 1903 and the Boston Red Sox (then known as the Americans) won it five games to three. Since this first series the Red Sox would go on to endure epic championship draught and the series would be standardized, limiting it to a best of seven game series.

The champions early on - baseball teams like the Red Sox, White Sox, and Cubs – did not end up starting dynasties. Instead, the comparative late bloomers would come to dominate. For instance, the New York Yankees are the most dominant franchise in the history of the World Series, first playing in the Fall Classic in the 1920s and taking three attempts to actually win one. Since then, the franchise has played in 40 World Series and won 27 of them.

Next on the list of appearances are the San Francisco Giants, St. Louis Cardinals, Los Angeles Dodgers, and Oakland Athletics. The Cards and A’s have been the most successful of these four, actually posting winning records.

The World Series is no longer quite the exclusive club. It still requires defeating all the teams in the NL or AL, but this century’s Fall Classics 21st have had quite sense of parity. This has not been a bad development and certainly has introduced many more fans to World Series tickets.
