Then last season they made a play for respectability, going 80-81 and landing in third place. Strasburg returns as the ace, though Manager Davey Johnson is still under orders to limit his innings. Last season Nationals fans had a tease after the previous summer's tempting tasting. In 2012, they expect much more, perhaps an NL CY Young performance or at least an All Star appearance. Jordan Zimmerman had a breakout season last summer, posting a 3.18 ERA and 1.15 WHIP. John Lannan is not going to Cy Young candidate or an innings-eater, but he is a shockingly stellar option at the end of the rotation. By all accounts, these five actually rank among the very best starting rotations in the MLB. Great pitching does not alone equate with wins. The offense needs to give these hurlers some kind of support. In the case of the Washington Nationals, the batting order is chalk full of power. Third baseman Ryan Zimmerman, first baseman Michael Morse, right fielder Jayson Werth, second baseman Danny Espinosa, and catcher Wilson Ramos all swing effectively for the fences. Add a decent leadoff hitter or perhaps an early arrival of Bryce Harper and the Nationals might give the Braves a run for second in the division.
