Tampa Bay Rays Tickets

The Tampa Bay Rays made a huge jump last season in terms of the culture of the franchise. The fans that spent their hard earned money on Tampa Bay Rays tickets were upset with the baseball team. Why? The club team finished 18 games above .500, and that is an impressive feat. However, the Rays did not win the AL East or score one of the two Wild Card spots. Basically, this team is now entering the pantheon of clubs whose motto is playoffs or bust.

With a pitching staff as impressive as this unit, that is a reasonable expectation. The Rays bring a Top-5 starting rotation and bullpen to Tropicana Field. If the batting order can produce at a mid-tier level the club should be mentioned as a World Series contender. This is quite a great deal of pressure to thrust upon a few of the players. It is no big deal that David Price is expected to content for the AL Cy  Young Award, but the departure of James Shields means Jeremy Hellickson has to become an inning eater and rookie Matt Moore has to make a big jump and quit wasting pitches. In addition, these expectations come as closer Fernando Rodney prepares for a major regression after one of the best seasons ever by a closer.

The biggest wild card is the offense. Joe Maddon has two hitters he can count on to show patience at the plate and give the lineup a little pop in Evan Longoria and Ben Zorbust. Maddon also has a decent trio of hitters in Matt Joyce, Kelly Johnson, and Luke Scott. The major hole is at the top of the lineup where the Rays have few options in terms of a passable on base percentage or the ability to work a pitch count.

Tampa Bay Rays History

The Tampa Bay Rays are one of the youngest franchises in the MLB and are just beginning to emerge from a much maligned existence in which the team seemed a failed experiment to extend the local baseball season beyond spring. A brief summarization of the club’s history can be that the team brought summer baseball to the Tampa area in 1998, dropped the Devils from the name after 2007, and introduced fall ball in 2008.

At first the fans had to endure the Devil Rays and a painful stretch that lasted a decade. It did not help that they were playing in a division with the Yankees and the Red Sox. So, when the team posted 100-loss seasons three times and could not finish with fewer than 91 losses it appeared the franchise had to be a target during the brief talks of retraction in the MLB.

Then the front office dropped the Devils and became the Rays. Tampa suddenly reversed its record and its position in the standings. The team won 97 games and finished in first place. Since this incredible 2008 season, the Rays have been to the playoffs in two of the last four seasons.

The strength of the team has been the impressive crops of starting pitchers coming up through the farm system. Pitchers like James Shields, Matt Garza, and David Price have flirted with or won the Cy Young Award. The rotation always seems to go at least three deep and rarely are these three older than 30.

In addition, Tampa seems to be a place to arrive to rejuvenate careers. First baseman Carlos Pena won the Comeback Player of the Year award in 2007 and closer Fernando Rodney repeated the task in 2012. It could be the managing style of Joe Maddon, a man who has won the Manager of the year Award twice since 2008. It could also be that General Manager Andrew Friedman is a master of cutting waste and finding players in need of a place to start over.

No matter which factors are really the driving force, the future finally appears to be bright in Tampa Bay, with winning records almost a certainty for the foreseeable future.
