Background - Tampa Bay Devil Rays
The young franchise played its first game on March 31, 2008 against the Detroit Tigers at its ballpark, Tropicana Field. The new franchise's roster was filled by aging veterans whose glory had passed. Wilson Alvarez, who had his success in the majors earlier in the ‘90s threw the first game for the Rays. The first hit was by an aging Wade Boggs, who stayed with the club to reach the 3,000 hit milestone.
The club has tried a number of moves to build a successful team, but none have worked. Early on the club tried to create a slugger-heavy team with Fred McGriff, Jose Canseco, Vinny Castilla, and Greg Vaughn. In 2002, the Rays rethought their strategy and moved to building a young base of good talent. The first wave of young talent included Aubrey Huff, Carl Crawford, and Rocco Badlelli. The club is currently in its second go-around of building young talent and hope that the clubs 18 wins in spring training are a sign of change for the Rays.

2008 Season Preview
|
 The Tamp Bay Rays have big expectations for talented outfielders Carl Crawford and B.J. Upton and first baseman Carols Pena. Crawford is expected to once again compete for the stolen bas crown. B.J. Upton has been converted to the outfield is an all around a talent who had a 20 homerun-20 stolen base season last year. Pena came up big with 46 home runs last year and the Rays expect him to reach similar totals this season.
The downfall of the team might be the young rotation. James Shields, a power pitcher, is the ace of the staff and will threaten to lead the league in strikeouts. The rest of the rotation is a large question mark, but Matt Garza, who was acquired through a trade with the Twins, may emerge as the number two starter. The bullpen is anchored by closer Troy Percival, but the Rays hope the rest of the pen delivers after a 6.16 ERA last season.
