The baseball team has hardly been the most active in MLB. They signed catcher Kelly Shoppach to a two-year deal. The catcher replaced Victor Martinez in Cleveland Indians and showed power, hitting 12 home runs in 89 games. The Rays also added a clear closer after closing games by committee last season. Rafael Soriano saved 27 games with the Braves last season and will be in the bullpen for at least a year. The rest of the time seemed to be spent signing key pieces to short term contracts. The Rays come into the 2010 MLB baseball season with a dangerous offensive group that includes pure sluggers like Carlos Pena and Shoppach and good all around hitters like Evan Longoria, Ben Zorbist, Jason Bartlett, and Carl Crawford. The pitching is young but promising. If the starting staff could remain consistently good on both the road and at home then this team could once again challenge the Yankees and Red Sox in the AL East.
